I have not had any problem with best buy in my area. They have the most knowledgable people about electronics around here. I can see the store calling the police if they are not sure. However, shouldn't police officers exercise better judgement? I hope the police department get sued for acting incompetent.

    What truly amazes me is...

Sure, the minimum-wage kid at Best Buy was stupid...
    But so was his manager....
and just about EVERY Best Buy staff member...

...and the POLICE! I mean, the police?!?!? I'd think that a cop would be able to educate the stupid Best Buy people to the fact that, yes, there are $2 bills.

There's also $1 coins out there, too. Surprise!

What a bunch of assholes. I can't believe this story doesn't end with Best Buy returning the 57 $2 bills and everyone sharing a good laugh at a terrible misunderstanding.

    Screw you, Baltimore Best Buy.

Why did he even have to pay the installation fee? They installed it free of charge. You can't change your mind about charging people....

"Yeah, those jeans you bought yesterday, my bad, they've gone up $50, you need to come in and pay". Sure....

$2.00 bills in protest? Protest is ALWAYS paid in pennies.

Best Buy yanked his chain. I hope he pulls back twice as hard.

When my sister was a teenager, she'd be watched suspiciously by store clerks, so she'd pretend to be shoplifting to see if she could get them to stop her. Then she'd make a big scene of it.

I thought the ink they use on currency never really dries. You can fold up a bill and smear the ink on regular paper. I hope he does sue best buy and gets a fat settlement. That's the dumbest damn thing i ever heard.

'I don't have to take these.' - You do if you want to get paid, Beetch!

I think he can actually get a judgement in his favor if she really said this. It is absolutely illegal to refuse legal tender as payment.

I agree that this guy will get tons of money, but let's look at the bigger issue here:

Why do we even make 2 dollar bills? Are we, as Americans, really too lazy to pull out an extra one dollar bill?

From what I read from the article, it was the girl cashier that put the marks on the bill, not the guy himself. Best buy should have checked with the cashier that was taking his money in the first place to find out where the ink smears came from.

No kidding. If I wanted to "protest," I would have gone to the bank and withdrawn the $114 in pennies. Then I would have unrolled all of them, thrown them in a grocery bag and gone to pay my bill.

If you are going to protest, do it right.

Oh yeah, make sure that you are a few pennies short. Then pay the difference with a Visa/MC Gold Card.:D

This might be an urban legend, but I recall hearing that pennies are only required to be accepted as legal tender en masse up to $5.

They really ought to get rid of the damned penny, it's economic waste. The copper lobby keeps it alive.

I'm pretty sure that's an urban legend. At least according to Snopes:
