Probably more than intentionally omitting Merry Christmas would.

Of all the cultures in the United States that celebrate holidays other then Christmas at or near the end of December, how many of them get those specific days off as holidays?

Also, besides Hanukkah, Christmas and Boxing day, what are some of the other religious/cultural holidays that occur during the last week of December?

None, really. But Best Buy is not advertising about days people get off. Best Buy is advertising to get people to buy stuff in a season when lots of people, Christian and not, buy stuff for other people.

As the Gap points out, Kwanza and Winter Solstice (not sure if anyone actually celebrates this). But atheists, Hindus, and others still celebrate 'the holidays' since kids have several weeks off, adults get several days off, etc. So it makes sense for Best Buy to promote their ads with "happy holidays" as opposed to "Merry Christmas" because they are targetting all those people as well.

I'm still upset the manager at Weiner's Clothing Store didn't wish me a Happy Festivus when I implicitly told him the week prior to the holiday that it was coming up.

I think the whole war on Christmas is manufactured by the right out of nothing.

Saying Happy Holidays is merely an attempt to be more inclusive. You say Merry Christmas, that's great, but say Happy Holidays to include non-Christians too. Jew Muslims, Kwanzaa, Solstice. What is wrong with being inclusive?

Why is it wrong if a company wants to be inclusive?

The Empire State Building celebrates so much diversity - why is it wrong to be inclusive?

If you want to say to me - a non-Christian, "Merry Christmas" that's great, I'll respond with Merry Christmas - even though to me it's no different than saying Happy Thanksgiving - it's just marking a day off - 12/25. But do i see "happy holidays" as being more contextually relevant to me personally? Absolutely yes.

And if you are a business, and you want to get my attention, as a non-Christian, you will have more success with "Happy Holidays" than "Merry Christmas".

So why would groups like the ATF get so bent out of shape by this? And people here? It's just business. I thought people believed in free markets and all that stuff...I guess as long as it conforms to their belief systems?

I could be wrong since we only see a fraction of the whole flyer, but was the whole ad pretty much directed at Black Friday and not so much just as a Christmas sale? I know, with all the snowflakes and presents floating every where, it is IMPLIED. But, it just seems to me, that the ad was strictly directed towards a particular shopping day (instead of a holiday) which just so happened to fall on the another religious holiday. Thus, almost implying that, "Hey, happy YOUR holiday! Celebrate it with us by getting good deals!!"

Hell, I don't know. I just think it's so sad, that in this day and age, people get so irritated over the most insignificant things in the grand scheme of things. How about using your effort in a more constructive and helpful way rather than bi*** about an freaking print ad acknowledging your specific belief. Good grief!

I guess I'm the only one who thought it would be the Muslims offended at Best Buy for trying to commercialize their religious day. I guess I somehow underestimated the persecuted looney fringe of the Christian movement.

Perhaps BestBuy can make it up to them in February by printing up some "Happy Lent" flyers.

I can definitely see the double standard. They don't use Merry Christmas in favor of Happy Holidays to be more inclusive but then they throw in a Muslim holiday during Thanksgiving which is not religious at all.

I would be very interested to hear why you think that axiom applies in this instance.

That, or he means they're going to announce a close down for "rennovations" in the middle of the holiday shopping season without even informing their shareholders first.

It's ****ing sad that there are Christians who believe this or that there are Christians who are okay with other people thinking Christians are this way.

I wonder if these "family first" groups realize they are a cause of our country's cultural dysfunction.

All they're concerned about is some mythical standard of "purity" that doesn't exist and is arbitrarily inclusive.

I agree with all your points, certainly, but just so you know, because of your inadvertent typographical error this year I'm going to start going off on people who wish me "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" with accusations of Jew Muslimhood.

As in, to the sad sack Target greeter, "Yeah, sure. It's company policy, but it's all you Jew Muslims' fault for denying the birth of our Savior. I'm taking my business to Wal-Mart. Over there they show a little bit of class. If you ever want me back as a customer, you should learn to respect this country's Christian heritage, Jew Muslim." Then I'll spit on the floor.

    'Tis the season, after all.

Aren't muslims the same guys that threated to kill people at a Dutch people for a picture of Muhammad? Muslims are happy that Best Buy includes them and excludes Christians. They are ready to kill, if you put up a picture of their prophet though.
