That is like reading some clutchfans best album lists. Might be really good, but never heard of any of them, so hard to imagine they are the best ever. Is the list a "Best games released lately" or something?
I guess it depends on what is considered lately, most of the current top 10 are from the early to mid 2000's but all the games ever produced are on the site and open for anyone to rate. That being said people are more likely to write reviews for new games than they are for something like chess. These aren't mainstream games that you would find at walmart and most of them are by european designers, but you can find quite a few of them at Barnes and Nobles now, and pretty much all of them on Amazon. All of the games on the list have received a minium of 3,000 votes, and many of them have between 10,000 and 27,000 votes. Of course this is a website dedicated to board games and it is a popular vote. They certainly aren't going to be on the highest selling games of all time lists. The most common attribute of the top games on that list being that luck plays a minimal factor in who wins or loses. I can say that if you like strategy games and try some of the ones on that list you will have a hard time going back to games like monopoly, sorry, risk and other childhood staples. Even more "advanced" games like Axis and Allies have a lot more luck involved than the typical euro-game. Settlers of Catan being one of the most common entry level games of that general style.
It's really a golden age of board games right now. Tons of awesome games, small publishers who don't need to sell 1m units to make a profit. Monsterpocalypse is another one that I really love. It's a strategy game where you and your opponent take turns putting out buildings, then you each have giant monsters that beat the crap out of each other and slam/toss each other into buildings.
I agree with SeƱor DaveLoco. It's probably just a list of all board games, no matter if it's a good or bad game. It's not one of the best.
Getting pretty out there I know, but I always was a fan of the Avalon Hill Bookcase games. Third Reich was my favorite. Think of it as the board game equivalent to the PC game Hearts of Iron. ALSO: A much simpler game than Third Reich, but WAY fun. I know...I know...Gamer geekdom showing.
For me, the current crop of games has way outpaced the 'classics'. So in a way, it is the best lately.
