Spoorloos [The Vanishing] (1988) - More of a thriller really... but that ending was one of the darkest and most haunting I'd seen. Don't watch the 1993 remake. It has a slow pace, but you'll like it. The Devil's Backbone (2001) Don't Look Now (1973) The Woman In Black (1989) - remake was terrible. Ju-On (2002) - this is the original Japanese version of the "Grudge" [REC] (2007) Alien (1979) - space horror masterpiece. The Descent (2005) The Tunnel (2011) - has elements of Descent, Blair Witch, and REC The horror genre is the weakest in terms of a limited number of high quality movies. Once you've seen the top 10 or 15, it's a steep drop after that. You really need to adjust your expectations. Subtitles are never a problem for me so that really increases the number of good horror films.
Same here but all I really remember from when I was a kid was some girl riding a big wheel down the hall and a hand covering my eyes when a lady stood up in a bath tub.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre scared the heck out of me when I was younger. Of more modern films, the only thing that's gotten my heart rate up was Paranormal Activity. Silly, I know. Exorcist, Carrie, The Shining, The Thing, etc, etc, I didn't bat an eye. Scary is different to different folks, I suppose.
The Strangers - I'm a 38 y/o man. Watched the movie 4/5 years ago and it still has me messed up. Someone can ring my door bell all night I'll be damned if I'm going to answer it.
Matt Schaub starting for the Texans. Other than that, I'd go with: John Carpenter's The Thing (the prequel stunk) The Shining (film was better than book, deal with it S.K.) Alien
This scared me soo bad when I was a kid..... Not sure if close encounters of the third kind is a "horro/scary" film but it sure did scare me... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OuH_qx192js" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Anyone seen Martyrs? So graphic, a good 'horror' thriller to watch once off.. The movie doesn't stand up to multiple watches though
In between the KFC shouting match with Samuel L. Jackson and hearing "Ice, Ice, Baby" for the first time? Somebody help me out here.
The first 1/2 was very intense, but the 2nd half was a let down. I get the movie was more about the "becoming", but it was just so different from the 1/2. Still, overall it was a good movie.
One that I would call scary but haven't seen mentioned: Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call) - however, I saw this movie almost 10 years ago, so I don't know if I would still call it scary. Someone else seen it? I'm sort of torn about watching Martyrs. I hear it's good, but I have no interest in gore.
