    In no particular order:

    moe.
    Phish
    Tool
    The Doors
    Grateful Dead
    Velvet Underground
    Primus
    Band of Gypsies
    Allman Brothers Band
Any Miles Davis outfit, but especially w/ Joe Zawinol (sp?), Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter..
    Headhunters
    Sly & The Family Stone

    That's all for now.

(hmm...no one has said the Beach Boys - stuff is kind of impressive, even if not my thing.)

    does Elvis count?

how about Dylan? (not my bag but.)

    Some in my bag :

    the Velvet Underground
    the Pixies
    the Ramones
    the Replacements
    X
    Blondie
    the Talking Heads
the Cars (yeah, it's spud. but really good spud.)
    The B 52's
    REM

Then theres Van Halen and Aerosmith, etc. Genre-defining things.
    Slayer. Mettalica. etc.

We are leaving out R & B - which is the best american stuff. Barry White, Supremes, Martha and the Vandelas, Phil Spector, Sly and the Family Stone... goood lord

and Funk - with JB, Parliment, Isley Bros

And Disco - with some really really great all-american tunes.

but for rock - spec. indie rock - yeah i like that 70s 80s bridge stuff when the punk thing was reworked and everything seemed to matter.

Some might be thrown out, but I will give them a chance:

    Little Feat
    War

How about the white guys that were with Motown Records?

How about the brothers from Beaumont?

i didnt mention the beach boys cause they werent really rock and/or roll as much as pop.

as far as amercian groups in general though, they would definatey be up there in my book.
    as would dylan...
    as would the boss...
