Righto on the ZZ Top. Now, this is unofficial. It kept us guessing at a bar one night. There could be a band like the Knickerbockers or some other obscure 60s band with one hit that is still kicking around.
After four or five Jameson and waters, they sure as hell count to me! I'm the guy five inches away from the "stage" singing along to "Walk Away, Renee."
I've never seen one of those bands perform "Walk Away Renee". If they did, I'd be a fan. When I walk into the lounge, they are usually doing their Neil Sedaka medley.
Thought I'd post some comments I made on another web site about modern day "Rock": "Imagine Blink 182 or bloody Matchbox 20 back when Rock was ROCK? You don't see either of them drinking themselves to death, biting the heads of small flying mammal's or burning guitars. No, they cant afford to because they have bloody exams on Tuesday!" "I mean, these kids don't even have groupies. They'd get security to take them away. Not in my day son....in my day....groupies stood in line until the big dog was ready to eat." "I play music from back when Rock was ROCK......not like now where any b*atch that can wear sunglasses is called a Rock band. Yeah, back in my day when we drove cars that burned holes in the ozone layer.....rock was something to be proud of man....."
Are we talking with or without ruffles? Alright, we're gonna take a short break but we'll beeeee right back. Soooo, until then....don't you go changin'
No offense, but that list sounds like a playlist at urban outfitters...whats up with all these hipster bands these days? what ever happened to good old r n'r
I hate to internationalize this topic, but THE CLASH blows all those bands out of the water they actually stood for something, wrote amazing songs, and had style while doing it. LONDON CALLING is quite possibly the greatest rock n' roll album of all time. Rock n' roll is being kidnapped and the corp/tv/radio are responsible for it(oh no not a cliche). I mean come on, have you guys actually watched/listened to the music thats being put out now? PSEUDO ROCK!? BUT...The SPIRIT is alive and well in local clubs and bars with bands trying to "make it". Flame away.
I agree completely, weezer. England has always had the better bands compared to our country, IMO. However, I have learned that it isn't worth the time and effort to criticize the majority of the bands in this poll.
Compare longevity straight up. How many hits have the White Stripes had? okay, i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and include the crap off of the White Blood Cells CD: -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Fell in Love with a Girl -We're Going to be Friends -Hotel Yorba -Seven Nation Army -The Hardest Button to Button -Blue Orchid -My Doorbell Incubus: -Take Me to Your Leader -A Certain Shade of Green -Pardon Me -Stellar -Drive -Wish You Were Here -Nice to Know You -Warning -Megalomaniac -Talk Shows on Mute -Make a Move Foo Fighters: -I'll Stick Around -Big Me -Monkey Wrench -Everlong -My Hero -Learn to Fly -Breakout -Next Year -The One -All My Life -Times Like These -Best of You -D.O.A. Now...how about the hit quality of those songs...i'd say only 4 of the white stripes songs actually earned solid airplay while Incubus had at least 7 and the Foo's having around 8 with a very strong presence on the airwaves. I would argue that Make Yourself and Morning View by Incubus both completely dominate any CD by the White Stripes, as do The Colour and Shape and In Your Honour. Actually, the white stripes would learn a lesson if they followed the setup by the Foo Fighters in their recent CD, In Your Honour. If they had one high energy CD and one mellow/crap cd it would be alright with me. The high energy one could have the feel that is given with songs along the lines of "Seven Nation Army," "White Orchid," "My Doorbell," "The Hardest Button to Button," "The Denial Twist," and "Take Take Take" - then they'd have a damn good high energy CD that would absolutely in the very meaning of the word, ROCK -- and the other cd could have the other crap. but instead they decide to artistically throw in absolute garbage mixed in with good songs. what garbage you ask? the crap along the lines of "Passive Manipulation" and other weird folk crap. Incubus and the Foo's at least have strong supporting songs on their CD's to make it more than just a 4 or 5 song listening.
i can't think of a worse criteria for judging the merits of a band than popularity and radio airplay. why no love for kings of leon? come on, people! BRMC, too, who's new dylan-esque album is amazing.
it's all about supply and demand. if there's a demand for the song to be played, then it is supplied. hence it is a worthy criteria. oh...and did you see the rest of my post? about support songs on the cd - because obviously that plays into it. i was just trying to take it from a couple different angles.
To have real standing as a legend, you have to have a combination of three things: Critical success Popular success - even if it is through a cult following Influence You can have one or two of those and be a good band, but to be legendary, you have to have all three. All of the greatest bands/artists of all time - Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, etc - all covered those three bases. It is the mark of legend status.
Did you get that from a song? And The Yo-Yo's are British, right? Danny from the Wildhearts I figured was British, at least. I second the King's X. Also mark me down for BUCKCHERRY, SUPERSUCKERS, and ANDREW W.K. Oh, and THE EAGLES OF DEATH METAL are better than QOTSA. EDIT: Never mind, TYPE O NEGATIVE might just be the only answer to this question.
