penelope cruz and thandie newton come to mind. they have done roles right up there with some others mentioned.
I think they've had more outstanding roles than Julia has. I don't really think Julia should be on a top actress list either.
That's crazy. You may not like Julia Roberts or her movies, but she has had plenty of critically acclaimed roles. maybe. Like others have eluded, she's got mass appeal. BUt she's also good in her roles too. Cruz is very good but i'm hesitant to put her on a tops list. Then again, i've never seen he foreign films which does make up the bulk of her stuff. Thandie? come one. She's hot and i think she's good but she hardly has enough to be mentioned on the top actress list.

exactly..nothing. Everyother movie she's in she is pretty much eye candy. She's not a bad in those movies, but that's her role. SHe's never carried a film like some of the others mentioned
Agreed. By the way, even though I think Streep is the better actress, I think people in here calling Julia Roberts a hack are completely off base. She's a good actress. She's better than most, though not as good as some. What she combined was actual acting talent with good looks which allowed her to be very marketable. Most women in the business lack one or the other.
well said. Julia may not be great, but she is still very good. She combines very good acting with the proverbial "it" factor.

Agreed. By the way, I looked up Gabrielle Union to discover she is the girl from Flashforward. Very attractive, but again, not anything special as an actress as far as I can tell. I guess JeopardE's standard for "better than Julia Roberts" is "would have sex with." Although the Whoopi mention is a little off.
