De Niro for one reason only: Midnight Run. One of the most underrated comedies of all-time and De Niro as Jack Walsh was great. "Jack, you're a grown man. You have control over your own words." "You're g---amn right I do. So here come two words for you. Shut the f--k up!"
I like both, but Dinero by a landslide. BTW, am I the only one who thinks Scarface is one of the most overrated movies of all time? Shock value doesn't make a good movie. And Pachino's fake latin accent was really a distraction. Kind of like Costner's fake cajun accent in JFK.
This would have been a relevant question in the 90's but both of these two have been running on fumes as of late.
i think you have to give deniro the edge for a little more range and a little better longevity/consistency in terms of being in good movies. he's just had so many damn good roles and movies. but i don't see how scarface can be anything other than a huge credit to pacino. he made that movie. that character could have been a huge swing and a miss, and if he messes it up, the whole movie goes down as well. not only did he not miss, he basically hit a walk-off grand slam. he made the movie and he made tony montana a legendary screen character, and even made us root for him.
I don't know, meet the parents is solid, hbo ran the play "Angels in America" about Aids in New York before people knew what it was. Al Pachino gives a great performance as Roy Cohn, the guy who worked for Joe McCarthy
These two guys were in a dead heat in this category, until last year, when DeNiro broke the tie in... STARDUST
i voted pacino, but I agree, i just don't think scarface is that great of a movie. it's not bad but i don't get the hype at all. carlito's way was better imo.

^ great footage of Pacino playing the same "scent of a woman" facsimilie he has played in every single movie for the last 20 years.
I think at their best they are pretty much equals but DeNiro has a higher quantity of good performances and has showed more diversity in them as well.
Really, if someone's going to compare these two actors, they have to see their greatest work. The Deer Hunter is arguably De Niro at his best. It's out now all remastered and stuff. You should pick it up and treat yourself. Agree that we're talking about two actors that hail from the previous generation and did their finest work then. It was fun seeing their films in a theatre at the time.
Ahh, Deer Hunter.
