Several come to mind. I was and still am a big speed racer fan. I also think scooby do was awesome tv I can't remember but the amazing spiderman was probably the best cartoon ever made. Was that in the 70s?

I've heard rumors that there is going to be a live action movie with tobey maguire... just hope they don't dumb it down like they did with transformers.

I can't believe Transformers isn't getting more love. They had a pretty good storyline and they added better characters as time went on, dinobots, constructogons (sp), those planes that made a giant robot, etc.

You're kidding. I loved Transformers as a kid, but try watching it again and you will be bored out of your mind. I tried watching it two years ago and I struggled to stay awake.

Of these three, Transformers was by far my favorite.

But I think Voltron (lions) and especially Robotech were better. Robotech blew my mind when I first saw it. (I was young)

And yes, it's terrible now, but I loved He-Man. I was a little old for TMNT, but I watched it a little with my younger brothers. I don't think it compares because it came later.

The Voltron Lions were pretty good. I had forgotten about Robotech and I may have to agree that it was the best on the creative front.

...You can always count on Fatty to bring on the 80's nostalgia.

GI Joe FTW, Transformers close second. The GI Joe movie put it over the top in my book.

Maybe I didn't see all of the Thundercats seasons. It always seemed so repetitive to me. I'll have to check it out again with my son.

Dungeons and Dragons had so much potential but it was snuffed out too early. :(

He-man and TMNT were Ok, but nothing to wake up early on Saturday for. Even as a kid I didn't care for the muscle-bound He-Man characters.

Of the Japanimation (that's what Anime was called back then, kids), it was:

    1. Speed Racer
    2. Voltron
    3. Battle of the Planets

    In no particular order:

    Ghostbusters
    TMNT
    Inspector Gadget
    Thundercats
Captain Planet (now that I think of it, this wasn't 80s, but whatever!)

Also, does anyone remember that computer animated show Reboot? I know that wasn't 80s but I loved it.

Of the choices the first couple of seasons of Transformers ending with the movie were great.

Still nothing is better than Robotech, the first part based with Rick Hunter, it was awesome scifi drama. Pretty rewatchable even today once you get over all the reused actions sequences.

Me and my brother was glued to the TV when this came out. The animated Johnny Quest that came out was awesome too.

It had a continuing story arc, people actually died, and it showed that people were both afraid and tired of war. Easily the best story-wise for me. Not to mention the kick-ass Veritechs and the SDF-1.

    Robotech
    Voltron
    GI Joe
    He-Man
    MASK
    Thundercats
    Silverhawks
    Centurions

...were all tv staples for myself.

Agree man, it was a very well done story esp. considering the manner in which it was being brought over to the US, using exisiting animation with new voices and plots. Veritechs were right up there with my transformers as some of my favorite toys.

TMNT wasn't a drama by any stretch of the imagination.

But even though I was never a big TMNT fan, I remember how quickly they were able to profitably hit all the revenue streams: comic book, toy brand, cartoon, video game and two profitable movies in a quick five-year span.

In any case, I'm gonna have to give the drama edge to GI Joe, but only because of the first animated movie. The Cobra-La guy threw a spear into Duke's chest....and they showed blood. Watch that on Fox Kid's Club on an inservice day, and it changes you forever.

Transformers - a child's first introduction to the inevitability of death. I still remember how everyone in the room was bawling their eyes out when first Ironhide, ratchet, and prowl were killed and then of course when Optimus died.

I would just like to mention that the chick robot on a 1980's cartoon called Tranzor-Z shot missles from her "thingies". That has to count for something.

    OMG, Tranzor Z(EEEEEEEEEeeeee)

Spartacus, Mysterious Cities of Gold, David the Gnome....Nickelodeon toons had a little more heart and drama to them than the popular kick-ass 80's toons. As you'd figure since Nickelodeon wasnt really about the cool kid crowd. More the family picnic after you finish your homework crowd.

And some of the theme songs were just so unexpectedly sweet and emotional, like they were going after the cartoon song Grammy...Good memories...I'd surely live those days over again

I think the first two seasons of Transformers was the greatest cartoon of all time. I just wished they hadn't screw it up after the movie and got all off subject. TMNT came out in 1990 so it’s not applicable for this category. I loved Heathcliff and Cadillac Cats mad comic relief. I used to always watch GI Joe before school loved it but didn't go crazy about it like I did Transformers. He-Man was off the chain then but now when I watch the episodes on DVD I realized how much the cartoonist tried to save money with simple background just plain funny. One cartoon I secretly love was Gem she was truly outrageous. Thundercatts I liked more when I got the DVD's when I was young wasn't into it as much now I give it its props. Voltron was awesome I would say I’m surprised they didn’t remake it but them I think of Power Rangers then I realize that its nothing but a copy even more as they move on in the series. What I do realize is the 80’s had mad load of great cartoons I actually feel sorry for kids now I really don’t think theirs are really that good. They get caught up into making the toons more realistic than actually having a nicely written show (maybe I just grew up).
