Like all those bands, but thee best American band in the 70's was pre-crash Skynyrd. Barely edging out Aerosmith. Please don't ever forget that once upon a time, Skynyrd WASN'T a joke. As evidenced. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tVNKS4-xCwo&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tVNKS4-xCwo&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Pink Floyd followed by Zeppelin. Most underrated though were Genesis (especially the Peter Gabriel era) and Roxy Music.
And even though they started in the '60s, I think The Who remain very overlooked for their 70s stuff. Also throw in Yes as another that should have gotten more respect but didn't because they were in the "arty-farty" progressive scene like Genesis.
I love a lot of the bands mentioned. Ones that haven't been that should vie for the title: The Band Velvet Underground
The Residents. 70's output: Meet the Residents (1974) The Third Reich 'n Roll (1976) Fingerprince (1976) Duck Stab/Buster & Glen (1978) Not Available (1978) Eskimo (1979) All genius, if not exactly catchy. Then I would vote Black Sabbath, still sounding modern today with the following albums: Black Sabbath (1970) Paranoid (1970) Master of Reality (1971) Black Sabbath Vol. 4 (1972) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973) Sabotage (1975) Technical Ecstasy (1976) Never Say Die! (1978)
There have been some significant omissions. Rolling Stones Queen Steve Miller Band TED F'ING NUGENT ELTON F'ING JOHN but Led Zeppelin = best of the decade
Deuce, that picture brings back so many memories. I used to have that exact poster on my wall as a kid and I would just literally stare at it for hours thinking how cool it was.
