I don't advocate nonsense like allocating loans or interest discounts towards STEM majors while forcing future historians and social workers to study part time for ten years and be too broke for grad school. (Business undergrad, particularly finance, is a perfect example of an historically practical and lucrative degree that was trivialized once 25% of undergrads started taking it and flooding the individual job postings.) That having been said, the major is relevant if you don't have management or ownership connections through your family, or just flat out don't overlap class-wise (demographically, socially or behaviorally) with hiring managers for most entry level professional or internship roles. Just like working on a movie set, if you don't look and sound the part, you better be able to jump out of a moving car in a burning flamesuit, build a set or compose a film score.
