Ugh. We used him as leverage to sign one PG, and now we're using him again as leverage to acquire another.
Sorry, my brain must still be asleep. Are you saying we're using negotiations with Jones as a tool to hurry along a deal with the Sonics for Daniels?
And how could he? With Moochie Norris on the team, you better come with your "A" game or you get RUN!
I agree with your assessment of Jones. The question I have is whether or not he can measure up to the other PGs in the West and elevate his level of play enough to enable the Rockets to become truly competative on the court.
I don't live in Houston. Who is this Berman person? Is he a radio personality? If it's an article is there a link? I think Jones would be a very servicable point guard. He doesn't turn the ball over much and he's seems to be a pretty good shooter. All we would have to worry about then is our backup center.
H'es been signed and waived more times than Chucky Brown. No better than Lue in my opinion. But does add some additional height.
but he was a nice bakcup last season, so maybe he is a late bloomer remember... all he has to do is dribble the ball past half court, throw it to T-mac or Yao, and play defense
Yeah, that's how it looks to me. I don't know which guy we'll get, and I don't think CD does either. Maybe getting close with Jones will prod Seattle to do a Daniels trade on the terms we're requesting. If not, maybe we end up with Jones after all.
I remember Damon Jones being a decent 2nd banana back with the Coogs, when I went to school there. Tim Moore was the star of that team, and Jones was a streak shooter who could carry things when he got hot. I don't remember him being P1S2, but then he's likely had to adapt his game since he entered the NBA. Given his Maxwellian .396 career FG%, he's probably had to.
Like I said in another thread, you cannot judge a player on how many times they have been waived or traded or how many teams they played on. If you did that, guys like John Starks and Mario Elie and Avery Johnson wouldn't have ever established themselves in the NBA. You have to look at the stats to judge a player, not the number of teams they have played on. Heck, Jimmy Jackson has played on virtually every team in the league and that guy can play on the Rockets for the next 30 years as far as I'm concerned.
I have a feeling that Houston is waiting on Derek Fisher. He's not my first choice, and I think he's way overvalued. But, he's the main guy left on their top 5 list. I think he is waiting to determine what he'll do, depending on what Kobe announces this afternoon. Since Payton will probably be gone, Fisher could start there alongside Kobe, and I think he'd prefer to be in LA. If Kobe announces he wants to go to the Clippers, or they don't trade Payton, he'll probably sign with Seattle, Houston or Miami. At this point, if Fisher doesn't sign with Houston, I'd like to get Payton for one year, and if we can't get him, I just think we need to wait out the rest of the off-season, and see if there are any good deals that pop up to use our TE or MLE for best players available and depth. I don't want to get hamstrung on another bloated contract, ala Maloney, Anderson, Rice, Taylor, Norris, Weatherspoon, etc. We DO have to find a good deal on a backup center somewhere, using some of our TE. And, if there is any way to get Hinrich, Duhon, Daniels, or Ridenour, then lets make the trade. If not, lets experiment with Reese Gaines. You just never know, he could pull a Dwayne Wade, if given the starting assignment. If he doesn't pan out, then get someone like Nick Van Exel this winter. If Golden State would take any of our bloated contracts for VanExel's bloated contract, then that would work. I'm not sold on Damon Jones. Someone tell me ... how is he an upgrade over Lue? I mean I like the local connection, since he was from U of H, but I don't see him as being better than what we already have.
Payton has had a change of heart; he's gonna stay. I think the article is floating around somewhere in the NBA forum.
I did forget to add, we've always had two UH players on our team when we won the title. There must always be two....
Fisher, Jones, and Daniels all sound good. I think Will is right..we are using him as leverage again... I just want something to happen! No more waiting.. Fisher looks short..but he's 6-2. That was just a random thought.
