I said this guy was a good player before most of the people on this board even knew who he was. We would be lucky to get him, esp. now the Magic are in the Finals. But I don't care if we don't get him...

...just as long as we get Amare, then I'm happy! :D :p

Right but so many teams are going to be so close to that magical luxury tax threshold that this could hurt a player like him in free agency. We've all seen this song and dance before: raw young 6'10"+ player shows promise, said team decides "Hey, let's throw $7-8M a year (or more) at this guy!" because that's the going rate for [perceived] quality big men by today's NBA standards.

The difference this time is the economic squeeze that everybody is feeling. Sure, the Magic are probably feeling it (despite whatever increased revenues an NBA Finals appearance carries) but so are just about every other team capable of making a play for Gortat. If he gets an offer over the MLE i'll be absolutely stunned. Even more so if he gets it (within reason) and Orlando doesn't match it. Their only other free agency issue is retaining Turkeyglue and they have his Bird Rights, if I am not mistaken. If true, they will definitely get the last say in whatever happens to Gortat. But yeah, your point about paying $1-for-$1 past the LT could theoretically get in the way of retaining both so it should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Turkoglu will probably demand a 50mill 5 year deal, so if any team offers Gortat the MLE, it will be very difficult for the Magic to match it.

From what I've read, fans in Orlando are almost certain he is gone if the Magic decide to retain Turkoglu.

Even Otis Smith said he has thought of an ammount for him, but it could be less than what other teams are willing to pay.

Gortat is a VERY GOOD center. He could average a double double easily in 30+ minutes. He is a very good defender and rebounder. Has great work ethic and is very humble.

Theoretical question. If the Rockets had this guy could they have gotten past the Lakers?

It's obvious our names would be in the papers. We need a backup C, and he's one of the better ones on the market.

I doubt it. We did need a true 5, but what we really required was a closer.Marcin is athletic, big, fairly tall but quite raw.

He isn't starter material on a good team IMO. I love what I see from him, however. He is listed as 240lb but there is no way the guy is less than 260lb. I would love to have him in Houston but I have a feeling someone is going to shell out some big bucks for him thinking he can turn into a 30 minute a night player.

    Work the magic Morey

i see this as more of a smoke screen, gortat's been exposed in the playoffs, every team in the league knows he can play. he could start for half of the teams in the league just for his size and defense. i don't see him coming to houston, and i don't see morey spending the whole MLE on 1 player, especially when we need more than one player taller than 6'10. we need to sign artest first, get mac healthy, then add some size up front. the first 2 i see morey getting done easily, and hopefully we'll buy a late 1st or early 2nd to pick up some size and youth.

he looks like a deuche bag. but he's a solid backup. i'd prefer someone with more upside and athletism.

He has nothing in common with Brad Miller except his skin color (how many times have I seen this before). He competes defensively and can actually block shots. His offensive game is raw and unrefined. Definitely not worth the MLE but a solid guy to have coming off the bench for the same price as Scola (3 years, $10 million). Teams like the Knicks and Kings will expect him to do things beyond his capabilities to help them win games (inflating his value), whereas the Rockets just need him to come in and play his game.

So true. With the limited or derth of centers, someone is going to offer him full mle and a starting job. That's why I was telling people to quit dreaming. Not to mention, they couldve had a similar type player last yr in jordan and they wouldn't have to be loooking to pay a guy like him. Instead, they drafted a 6'6 center.

Well, I guess it looked worse than it actually was intended to be. It did look pretty b****y, though, you have to admit!

Gortat would be a decent pick up. Adding him and another point guard with defensive skills would be a great summer for the Rockets. Realistically, obtaining an all-star would be slim. Small moves like these would be just great.

they guy is worth taking a shot at. I like his game. But a 7 footer with a little skill is gonna always be overpaid. and if he wants to start, we don't have a change. A shame because i think this is the kind of guy we need to take minute off Yao at the beginning of the season.

He may not be the starter here, but he could get starters minutes in order to keep Yao rested for the playoffs.

I don't think Gortat will ever be this good again. He'll get a big contract and be considered an albatross for the rest of his career.

A team should definitely sign Marcin Gortat to a full MLE contract. He had a breakout year this season and can only get better from here. The team that signs Gortat to a full MLE deal will not regret it.

    Sincerely,

    Beno Udrih and DeSagana Diop
