The funniest part of the whole mess... The thing Ben Simmons SHOULD be most upset about is that the Sixers are so delusional about his value that he's never going to be moved. Ben should be telling Morey and the Sixers, "Guys... admit it. I suck. Just take the least worst deal for me, because I'm never going to help this team, even if I REALLY REALLY tried hard."
This is only my speculation. I think Morey's lack of playing background hurts his ability to see the importance of non-talent factors that make a player and/or a team great. He simply doesn't have first hand understanding of what makes players tick.
I know he never won a championship in Houston, but this is some unfair criticism considering that many of the Rockets teams he built here were pretty successful.
The problem is that Morey probably has the lowest amount of leverage and he is on the wrong side of a Simmons bubble, and he knows it. Also, he is aware that only piece the 76ers can move to bring anything back to help their window is Simmons so he has to make this move count or this window is gone. When he was with the Rockets, the only real other similar situation was problem with Yao and Tracy, and Artest became attainable. Even with Harden it was different because the window always seemed far off in the distance -- not really closing until they "fired" D'Antoni and pissed off Harden. The issue though is that other teams that would normally being in a position to sell are not right now. But Beal and Lilliard don't seem interested. And other mid level stars are teaming up behind other players. If anything, the issue with the 76ers is NOT Simmons. It is Embiid. If the other stars wanted to play with Embiid they could force their teams hands, but no one is doing so.
Why is everybody acting like Ben Simmons is just the definition of trash. All he needs to do is to develop a shot and he will be completely unstoppable. He's only 24.
because of the discrepancy of what he earns and what he gives you...also never forget 76 ers were losing 5 years in a row on purpose to get this guy....I applaud basketball gods!
yes of course but whats your opinion on the idea? i mean emibiid can get you a lot of assets and you make simmons your center
He has proven he is not a number one on a championship club. He has proven he is not a number two on a championship club. Question remains open if he is the third or fourth or fifth wheel on a championship club.
I've never said Morey is a bad GM. He has his strengths. He is definitely a smart guy. He is great at managing assets. He uses analytics to find undervalued talents. (But since almost every team uses analytics now, this edge is disappearing.) He is always prepared to pounce on opportunities. These are reasons why he has built fairly competitive teams in Houston. But he also made some important blunders. Many of them because of human factors rather than the misjudgment of talent.
The Big Mo story is great. Nowadays, you call somebody "fat and lazy" and you not gonna hear the end of it: insensitive body-shaming, emotional trauma, toxic environment... Here's a guy who became a multi-millionaire and a household name just because somebody told him a hard truth in the face. great story.
Maybe. But we got lots of good gms who dont have playing background and they do fine like or Ujiri. We also have so many former players who turned into crappy Gms like Jordan, Larry Brown, Phil Jackson etc. I dont think its a factor tbh. If you are a GM for a long time you have first hand experience at what makes good teams good already you see your players all day every day in practice, in games, in locker room. Its the same exp bro. Maybe for completely new GMs they are at a disadvamtage to former players, but for those part of the team FO before they became a GM they have vicarious experience on what being an NBA player is like having watched them for years already.
