A court today suspended the ban, however, the fight goes on. Sarkozy, the former French president, says he would ban the burkini if re-elected.

It's disgusting that women are compelled and forced to wear these signs of submission due to "religion". Good for France for addressing the issue.

French court suspends burkini ban, controversy goes on

A French court on Friday suspended a ban on women wearing full-body "burkini" swimsuits on a Mediterranean town's beach but the prime minister said the debate was not over, calling the outfit a symbol of a "backwards, deadly Islamism".

The Council of State's ruling against the resort of Villeneuve-Loubet is expected to set a precedent for the dozens of French towns that have also laid down such bans.

It said Villeneuve-Loubet's ban had "seriously infringed, in a manner that was clearly illegal, fundamental liberties such as the freedom to come and go, religious freedom and individual freedom".

The burkinis did not pose any threat to public order, said the council, which is France's highest administrative court.

The ban had been imposed on the grounds that wearing burkinis contravened French laws on secularism.

I'm curious where the line of free speech ends. If there was a generations old cult that made women believe they needed to wear a 100 pound backpack would that be allowed? Kids?

Seems like an arbitrary line based on societies current beliefs and values.

It is a free country forcing women to adhere to an out of date backwards leaning culturistic view is terrible.

Good on France to say...nope, we are moving forward, if you don't like it, leave.

Part of the problem is the name. It's not even a burka. It's essentially a spandex hijab, which isn't banned anyway.

All in all, a dumb ass decision made by dumb asses.

I'm glad i live in America

The courts did the right thing.

If the French are pissed about the burkini, they should dress up in clown suits at the beach and frolick around to display how idiotic and oppressive the burkini means to them.

    Force is Force
Whether you force them to wear it .. or force them to take it off . . . .
The Women have no agency in this situation

Meanwhile. . . Nuns are running on the beaches in full nun-ware
People in Swimming gear that looks almost exactly like the Burkinis

This is bullying and bull**** from the frogs . . . period.
She wants to wear it . .. she should be able to . . .
If she don't . . . . then she should not have too

The Government FORCING her not too . . basically going to strip them at the beach??? You are for that??? Really?

It is a symbol of oppression. Or maybe she can get a license to wear one, where she has to go through counseling and learn about her freedoms first....no men allowed.

Women are pretty much still forced to cover their tops in public in most places
More places than men are forced to cover their tops

The real oppression is forcing someone to be half naked on a beach. Let them choose. Don't be bigots about free speech.

Seems like something that should be a non-issue. I mean, sure those people are backwards but shouldn't it be their right to be ridiculous, backwards people?

The first amendment to the French constitution granted independence to African states. I'm not sure how that amendment would be relevant in this discussion.

a lot of muslim women want to wear burkas. in their efforts to "liberate" these women from their oppressive religion france is forcing them to do something many of them do not want to do.

this is the kind of stuff that pisses people off and turns them into extremists.

    France is not the USA.

France has an interest in preserving French culture. They are not a "great melting pot" like the USA. The most obvious example is it is entirely natural for French to be the sole official language of France.

I think they are going about this wrong - the way they are approaching it will generate pushback - but the rules that apply to France are, and should be, different than those for the grand experiment that is the USA. France lets people in with the idea that they will assimilate into the existing French culture.

Nah - this is France we are talking about, those women need to learn they are truly free and what that means without having their old cultural ways tossed onto them...they need to be re-educated.
