Wrath, From an A's fan, Dotel makes 2.8 million this year but is eligible for arbitration at the end of the year. That is why Billy Beane didn't want to make the trade. I wish it would have gone down because we need a closer in the worst way.
Forgot about the arbitration thing -- I guess that makes sense. But how many top-notch closers are available for cheaper?
For the 2.8 million not many. The A's could not afford the large increase he will get in arbitration. From everything I have read and heard the A's are trying to save money to resign Hudson and Mulder.
Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love you... tomorrow! It's only a day away! (Well... unless it takes a little bit longer... or someone lied through their teeth...)
Vescey- So the Astros are just going to let the Rockets get the headlines tonight with McGrady, and THEN make the move, right? We can only hope...in both cases. (PS- Do you know if we'll be seeing more of Lidge closing?)
I don't have a clue about Lidge. Or McGrady, for that matter. As for the other thing, well, I only know what I was told, and it might actually turn out to be nothing (as this is a "heard from a friend of a friend" kind of deal). Thought I'd share with the BBS, anyway... despite being told not to. (The whole thing is conjecture and rumors, so I don't see the harm. Besides, ANYTHING can happen in a day.) ... Then again, I DID confirm the Clemens deal a month ahead of time (but there was no game of "Telephone" being played then -- that was a direct source).
The TMac thing was tongue in cheek. Forgot my smiley. I wonder if we'll be able to move Dotel-making Lidge our closer- in this or if we'll have to give up our own prospects (which I'd rather not do if this is a rental.) The Astros can't be happy that Weathers came in to give up the grand slam last night. Though, Munro has been really good- he'll boost the pen when Pettitte steps back in place.
don't forget that munro is much more comfortable as a starter than out of the bullpen. Same problem we had with him last time. Great spot starter, shaky reliever.
I'm listening to a sports radio station in LA and they were talking about how the Astros-As-KC deal is back in negotiations and that right now it is the leading possibility for a deal All they mentioned was us giving up Dotel, and they listed some minor leaguers from the As, and Beltran as being involved. So I guess the deal aint quite dead yet
As an aside, I'm reading Money Ball and it's a really good book. I know more about Billy Beane than I ever thought I would and I'm only through the first 50 pages. Has anybody else read it?
Yep, just finished reading it. After reading it I'm surprised that Oakland would want to go after Dotel as Beane evidently does not like to overpay for closers.
