He traded Wagner because he knew he would have to pay him a bigger contract. Pettitte only signed for 3 seasons.
Doug Drabek, Greg Swindell. Andy Pettitte may only be signed for three years but he's due to make 17 mill his last. Kent took a discount but still got 18 mil over 2 years.
Wagner wasn't going to get a bigger contract. He was making 9 million, top money for an elite closer. The astros had to cut some payroll. When you have 9 million invested in a closer who gets you 3 outs every 3 or so games, it hurts a club, especially a middle market club. Besides his comments didn't help the situation
Chron: Astros pursuing Royals' Beltran Wow ... Houston is an exciting place lately when it comes to trades http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2643540 Astros pursuing Royals' Beltran By BRIAN McTAGGART Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle RESOURCES The Astros are one of a handful of teams in the running to obtain Kansas City Royals center fielder Carlos Beltran through a three-team trade, sources have said. According to sources, the Astros have explored the possibility of acquiring Beltran from the Royals and shipping closer Octavio Dotel to the Oakland A's, who would send prospects to Kansas City. Beltran, 27, is a switch hitter who is batting .280 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. He hit .307 last year with 26 home runs and 100 RBIs and was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1999. "I'm not going to comment on specific trade discussions," Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said. "There are a lot of conversations going on these days." The Royals are in last place in the American League Central at 27-40 and are prepared clean house. They sent reliever Jason Grimsley to the Orioles for minor league pitcher Denny Bautista on Monday. Oakland general manager Billy Beane has expressed interest in bolstering his bullpen before the July 31 trading deadline. The A's have a bevy of top prospects in the minor leagues.
Surely we can't get someone like Beltran for just Dotel.............. I would feel bad for Lane. Gets the job handed to him only to have it taken away a few weeks later.
Depends on the prospects that Oakland would send to the Royals. I suspect you are right, however. The Astros wouldn't want to give up too much unless they could sign Beltran to a deal prior to the trade being finalized.

Didn't see that one coming. I know Oakland has been dying for a close since Arthur Rhodes turned out to be a bust. l guess the Astros are prepared to hand it to Lidge. I am in Austin, so I have to ask this. What is in the water down there this week? The whole t-mac deal and now this?
who would be the astros closer after dotel? if the astros got beltran, do you think they would still go after aaron boone?
LMAO! If the trade is just for Dotel, then I would do it in a heartbeat. We can just re-trade him at the trade deadline if we are out of it and get someone else, maybe even better in return. No brainer.
Without a doubt it would be Lidge closing If they got beltran I don't think there is any way they go after Boone
