Like the Chad Ford article being mentioned in the GARM, it is his opinion. An opinion I wouldn't be opposed to seeing become reality, but an opinion none the less. BTW how does an Astros fan become the National Baseball writer for a Chicago paper. That seems sacreligous.
This other baseball writer mentions houston's interest in beltran. Houston just dumped outfielder Richard Hidalgo in a move some think positions them to make a run at Kansas City center fielder Carlos Beltran. The Cubs, too, are said to be interested in Beltran. http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/7439127
Its a gamble to go after Beltran because you know McClane won't dish out the money to resign him after this year because Beltran wants 15mil a year and I wouldn't want to trade a good minor league prospect for guy that will only be here in August and September.
Did you read RM95's speculation above? If he's right, then you have No idea how McLane will spend his money.
I have to believe Bagwell (or anyone baseball player making that kind of money) would never retire while under contract. Guranteed money and all.
Yup, McLane never dishes out money. Not really sure who signed Hidalgo, Kent, Pettitte, Wagner, Biggio, Bagwell, etc. to contracts, but it surely wasn't McLane.
I'm guessing if it came up, there'd be a good buyout of his contract. Bagwell seems like one of those rare players who wouldn't care as much about getting all his money as he would about not tarnishing his legacy by playing hurt and not playing up to the standards he's set for himself.
Yeah thats why he traded Wagner too right? Dude you know and I know that there is no way in hell he will sign Beltran. He may make a deal to get him this year but thats it. Beltran will want at least a 60 to 80million dollar deal.
We traded Wagner because he made some stupid comments at the end of the season, not to mention he was overpaid and we had what many believed was just as capable a replacement in Dotel. By the way, can you tell me if I should waste my time watching any more games this year? I mean since you have access to this crystal ball and all.
More. "He's 27. A center fielder. A switch hitter. Great speed. Age-wise, there hasn't been a commodity like him since Alex Rodriguez. Carlos is a special player." -- Scott Boras, Beltran's agent No way he gets an ARod deal but 8-years $120M will be in the ballpark of what they're looking for. Whether they get it or not is up in the air. Vlad got 5 yrs, ~$75M, so that's the baseline.
Isn't Scott Boras his agent? If so, this is definantly not gonna happen. Beltran would just be a half year rental player. Remember trading Freddy Garcia for RJ? That was our year too, plus we had a heck of a better record winning over 100 games. The Astros aren't gonna trade the farm away when they know they have so many veterans on the verge of retirement. However, i would deal Raul Chavez and that new AAA pitcher we acquired for a rented Beltran. But that's about it. I think KC can get a better offer from the Yankees. Their farm system is only groomed for trade bait.
Randy Johnson not signing had everything to do with he and his wife not liking Houston and zero to do with money.
I'm aware of that. He was set on going to Arizona from day 1. We offered him 12 million per season, more than any other pitcher in Astro's history. But what i'm saying, is the Astros aren't gonna trade a grade A prospect for someone who will most likely be a rental player like RJ was. Because Beltran's agent will be taking offers from every team in the league. Not to mention, Willy Tavaras is looking more like Beltran everyday now. He just lacks the power right now.
You don't need a "crystal ball" to know that Beltran will demand a big time contract. McClane won't sign him.
WRONG. wagner traded himself by soulnding like an a$$ and being overpaid. add to that the fact that we thought we had a solid replacement it Dotel, and that's why wagner got the boot.
Agreed! Just because we will have vets retiring in the next couple years doesn't mean we can go sign big names. We have alot of backpaid contracts on them, not to mention i imagine we'd all like to hold on to Wade, Roy, and Dotel.
Actually given Millers, Dotels and Oswalts perfomance this year we may actually have some money to spend. They probably wont get the big contracts we thought they were entitled to just a few months ago.
Besides Bagwell and Biggio who else has McClane signed to a big time contract? He got Kent because he took less money and only signed for 2 seasons. Beltran will demand atleast 6 or 7 years because Peter Gammons spoke with his agent a month ago and thats what they are looking for. Dodgers,Yankees, and Red Sox will bid for him in the offseason.
