But wouldn't that be profiling? I'm like justtxyank, we aren't privy to the evidence the jury saw, but on the surface, it seems like this cop really effed up big time. I'm not sure if he should go to prison but he should definitely lose his job.
Good points but in this situation self defense is being claimed on assumption. The cop "assumed" he was reaching for something, i thought cops told u to show your hands or something before just shooting you. Now if the cop saw the weapon i can see why he would shoot the guy.
Ok i get what your saying now not all the facts are there for us to really see who was at fault. Yea self defense doesnt have to be after you been attacked but when exactly was the cop in fear for his life?
I didn't say racial profiling. Cops making assumptions about people based on what neighborhood they are in = profiling. I don't think they fired him. This is from the Chronicle:
Good conversation by the way, repped for the good dialogue going on in here. It's rare. I don't see where he was personally. I'm holding out hope that there is evidence/testimony given to the jury that we haven't heard. Based on the clippings the news has given us it would appear there was no reason to fear for his life and a miscarriage of justice has occurred. I hope that is not the case, and therefore I hope this is a case of the news doing a piss poor job at reporting the facts.
sounds like a perfect store of F ups. Don't think the guy deserves jail, if he really felt threatened. But i'm glad Quanell has something to do today...i havent heard him cry wolf in a while.
Its not about profiling it is knowing your environment. If this was juarez I could understand being a little more cautious, but you are in Bellaire. I hope the city get bankrupted by the lawsuit.
Then I guess I don't see what the problem is? That sort of "profiling" is called basic allocation of resources. I guess I just assumed you were worried about something that people don't want the police to do.
wow, I really hope one day you get to experience the court system that "works". I hope you don't encounter police like these because I wish you no harm.
I'm going to repeat this for everyone who apparent missed it the first time THE COPS CLAIMED THEY TYPED IN THE WRONG PLATE NUMBER ACCIDENTLY AND SOMEHOW CAME UP WITH A STOLEN CAR
Furthermore, the cop in question had only been at the scene 32 seconds when he shot the victim. After pushing his mom. 32 seconds. Someone came looking to pull a trigger.
I really want to believe some just would be served, at the very least this guy couldn't be a cop anymore. I didn't know the verdict came down last night, didn't watch any news, but I just knew based on the fact that the victim was in his driveway and his mom was trying to tell the cops he lived there, that would be enough. I didn't even know about the ridiculous claim of accidently pulling up a stolen plate. I'm reading the details in the chronicle this morning and they don't mention that till like the fourth paragraph? I'm like wtf, do they not see how ridiculous that is How does the defense get past that?
you guys should not be mad at this specific cop but the entire system. everyone knows the score, you are not a person when you are talking to cops. If you react with normal emotions or responses you lose. You have to be a super polite robot, play their word games and deal with the abuse. this system was in place long before this moron cop was born
Yeah, that "typed in the wrong license plate" defense seems pretty far-fetched, if you ask me. Can any of our resident bbs statisticians tell me what the probability is of a license plate number being off by a letter and actually bringing up a stolen car? I mean, what are the chances? Oh, and by the way.....I'm reasonably sure that Mr. Brightside was being sarcastic...
it never should have gotten to that point, they wanted to pull these guys over as evidenced by their ridiculous excuse
that is how it works in bellaire and this cop is particularly dumb. That fact is it was a legal contact and once you are in contact you have to follow these BS rules of word games and not falling for their tricks.
