I was at a luncheon at Kim Son restaurant(downtown location) a couple of weeks ago sponsored by the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association to honor the class of 2006 highschool graduates. Out of 55-60 highschools that they (VCSA) were able to contact and communicate(trust me, this is not an easy thing to do because the schools usually don't give out any info about their students) 28 are either valedictorians or salutatorians. The Vietnamese American popuplation is about 2% of the total Houston population, how do you explain that there are 28 Vietnamese American students who are graduated at the top of their class? I know it's still highschool and they haven't done squat yet, but it is still a very impressive thing to accomplish. I have to give major props to their parents. ANY THOUGHTS?
Hey Tex, Good observation! But what about the parents of the other groups, I'd be inclined to think that they too would want the best for their children?
I'd be inclined to think the same thing, but I'm not a member of the household, so I don't know for sure. What I do know is that parents who place the highest value on education have the children that get the best grades. Most Asian parents place a very high value on education, and rightfully so. It might be a cultural thing.
BHS's parking lot was way too small for that. I recall everyone going underneath that bridge between Maple and Beechnut on Rice for said activity.
