I have no idea if What he posted was true or not. If it is the case that a signicant portion of black population are involved in criminal activities, what do you think a local Chinese should think.

A case here in the US prove the same point. The city I live in used to be considered a safe city due to its relative small size and make up of the local residents. In recently years the crime stat has been on the rise due to the influx of low income residents from the Chicago area and Illegal immigrants. What do you think the local popultion think about these new residents to the city?

I agree this does seem disturbing but I still don't see enough to say this is a government policy or the police or just some bar owners overreacting. I'm also not overruling out the possibility that this isn't patrons overreacting. For instance I was out at a bar the other day and I got carded, even though I'm in my late 30's while whites I went with didn't. Now being the only Asian I could say there is a disturbing pattern that Asians are being forced to show their ID's while whites aren't but that wouldn't be supported by such a small sample size and there are other explanations out there.

As I said before I won't rule out the possibility there is something sinister and official going on in this situation but I don't thing we should just presume the worst and abandon skepticism.

We as humans use generalization all the time. What do most people do when they see a youth wearing ganster style cloth? Avoid them. What do parents tell their kids how to treat each type of strangers (I doubt they worry too much about being PC then). These generalization while not very accurate but does provide a sort of useful guidelines in life.

 

I never said that, I just said why people feel the way they do.

While profiling might actually be statistically useful, the problem is that if the police does it, they have a good probablity of targeting the innocent people even though it has a higher a probability of success as well. So I am not for profiling.

 

There is a problem with your parallel. It's undisputed that the politics of the New Yorker magazine tilts heavily to the liberal side. The endorsement of the Obama presidential bid by New Yorker is assumed and unchallenged. The Obama cartoon, while done in poor hyperbolic taste, is seen "self-deprecative." It is one thing for people to use some generatlized knowledge, it is another thing for the government to use it for law enforcement.

So if you meet a couple ganster looking youth on an empty street in Chicago, You would not try to avoid them but walk right up to them right? Since you never profile anyone. I also assume you tell your kids(grandkids) the same thing, no matter how threatening someone looks, don't treat them any differently.

 

You just don't "get it." There is a huge difference between looking askance at someone who appears threatening, regardless of race, etc., and lumping an entire group of people of the same race together. A huge difference. One is based on the situation you face on the street, where you have to use your own judgement. The other is simply lumping everyone together as somehow "bad" and "dangerous" and "threatening" and "evil drug dealing pimps," just because of their race.
