You ever visit the Cellar in Houston? My dad was a bouncer there at one point. Way before ZZ Top, the group was the American Blues... Dusty Baker was part of them, they bleached their hair white, then dyed it blue. Dad was a "north side character" back in those days.
Sure, I remember the Cellar. I went there, as well as the Catacombs and other places. American Blues and the Moving Sidewalks morphed into ZZ Top. Love Street was psychedelic central. The Elevators, Bubble Puppy, and the Moving Sidewalks (Billy Gibbons), among others, played there. Liberty Hall became a good venue, a little later. The Catacombs had some great concerts. Ask your Dad if he remembers the Houston Pop Festival, on August 31, 1968. The Mothers of Invention, Country Joe and the Fish, Canned Heat, and Moving Sidewalks playing in a club. What a trip! I'm sure anyone who was there couldn't forget it, either. The Music Hall had just amazing concerts. Just about every famous group from back then played there, and it was cheap. Hendrix, Cream, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, Ten Years After, Spirit, Traffic... and on and on. Three groups playing in a concert was very common, and sometimes more. The seats were usually between $3 and $5 bucks, tops, with $5 being front row and the rest of the prime seats. Sometimes it was less than $3 to get in, and there really wasn't a bad seat in the place, with great acoustics. He'll remember KFMK and KPFT (Pacifica), two great radio stations, back when the DJs played a truly eclectic mixture of music, and we were constantly hearing new groups. I grew up on the Southeast side, and maybe he went to the free concerts at Milby Park, which was a cool scene for awhile. Back then, I had more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.
