I don't dring much any more - about one beer every 3 months when I need to attend an important happy hour.

    No reason for it:
I don't like getting drunk. The taste isn't that great. It messes with my digestion. Drinking and driving can be expensive and dangerous. It's a depressant. It makes me pee a lot. It's fattening.

As a man who has lost over 60 lbs I can say this with authority.

Beer is great when you're trying to settle down or "pace" yourself.

Otherwise, it will make you fat.

kinda what he said (except for the ganj). i've got the same drinking habits i had in high school - heavy consumption.

this weekend was no exception. 1 date party, 1 mixer, 1 tailgate, several after parties. hell, i was up at 8 am yesterday drinkng beam 'n coke (soon switched to bloody mary's though). i drink about 5 or 6 nights a week, on average.

if i had to put a number on my weekly beer consumption, i'd say 50-60.

    hmm..

about 12 tall boy cans of Lone Star

and here are my two cents about the whole beer thing...

drinking a beer is an experience. While you work on a bottle/can, you talk about your day/week, weird things that happened, girls, music, ect with your buddies... It's about camaraderie.

Liquor, you take a shot and next second it's gone and you just look at each other like, (hmm...that tastes like #hit).

I love beer, but I my stomach can't take liqour anymore. I go through periods when i drink a ton or beer, then I won't drink for awhile. Next weekend, I'm planning on drinking around 30-40 beers, so it should be fun.

Not a beer drinker. Tend to have wine or mixed drinks when I drink socially.

Granted, I'm only 17, but am I the only one who finds drinking undesirable?

I don't understand the whole culture that's been built around drinking, even "socially".

Alcohol is a drug, despite the fact that it's hardly ever labeled as such. That's why you hear of "drugs and alcohol" instead of just "drugs". And it's the most dangerous drug, statistically speaking. More people are killed by alcohol than any other drug.

So why is it deemed acceptable? And why is it viewed as a social thing?

And why do some people feel they need it "to relax"?

I like being in control of myself, at all times. I avoid anything that would make me less responsible by getting rid of my inhibitions or put me in a position to make bad decisions and endanger myself.

Like I said, I'm only 17, so I'm sure that I'll get lots of answers like "You don't have anything stressful in your life that you need alcohol to relax" or "You haven't been exposed to it enough yet" or some such thing.

    I just don't get it.

i drink essentially one night a year: the friday before the ou game at across the street bar in dallas.

which means i just drank 2 nights ago.

i cannot stand the taste of beer, but i do like getting buzzed/drunk (at least the few times i've done it). if it tasted like big red or dr. pepper, i might be an alcoholic but as it is i only do it on that night because it's such a great atmosphere and worth trying to get through the taste. after the first 2 or 3 this friday the others didn't really taste like anything so that was good.

this was the first time i actually got wasted. got a good buzz last year, couldn't remember the rest of the night this year. somehow my friend got all of us in a cab, which i don't remember, and got us in the hotel room, which i don't remember. i do remember puking (though apparently i was puking for a few hours and passed out right outside the bathroom which i didn't know) and feeling bad but barely. still, it was a fun night, but after throwing up it'll be awhile before i can think about the taste of beer again without getting queasy.

i have no idea how people can just pound them back or, even worse, drink them with a meal. that would just completely ruin the meal for me.

Good post - no, you are not the only one.

About 6 to 7 years ago, I used to drink about 5 beers a month, usually at little social gatherings that were after work and involved people from work.

But I can't even remember the last time I had a beer. Maybe it was the last time I got plastered which was 6 years ago. Just never liked the taste of them.:)

I was in Baltimore over the weekend. I visited the Waterfront, and went into a shopping mall there. They had a store called the Beer Store, that sold homebrewing kits, beer/bar supplies, and Tshirts. One of the Tshirts read:

    FINISH YOUR BEER
THERE ARE SOBER CHILDREN IN INDIA

    Should've bought that one!

    Bah. Lightweight. ;)

I'm not much of a beer fan, which is kind of hard while pledging- I make up for it by being able to take down liquor pretty well. My first OU weekend was quite an interesting one for sure.

Ender- Being not much older than you, and sharing a reasonably similar opinion not too long ago. I will say alcohol is definitely an acquired taste. Chalk it up to product of environments, but parties with alcohol are very different than those without. If you can go without, all the more power to you. A lot of people around me smoke a lot, but I won't touch the stuff. Never have, never will.

Yep, it helps people to loosen up. A lot of people are in dire need of that!
