I haven't had all of 'em, so I don't know yet. But I don't think it's possible to make a beer better than Guinness. Oh man, I'm getting thirsty just thinking about it.
I'm hearing a lot of love for Shiner in this thread. I assume you guys are talking about Shiner Bock. I work at a restaurant and go out fairly often and see preppy white guys ordering Shiner Bock all the damn time...so I finally decided to try it out. It has the least flavor of any beer I've ever tasted. I think Michelob Ultra is more flavorful than Shiner Bock. It's not that it tastes bad -- it just doesn't taste at all to me. I don't get it -- what is up with the love affair for Shiner?
Michelob more flavorful than Shiner? Since Shiner has gone nationwide I don't think its as strong as it used to be but its still pretty flavorful and IMO better than most mass produced beer, certainly than any Michelob I've had. As far as beers I've been drinking a lot of wheat beers recently such as Blue Moon and other Belgian styles. One of my favorites is the Pyramid Unfiltered Wheat.
Carefull...Them's fightin words. I like Shiner alot but it tends to give me heartburn. I've been a Sam Adams fan since before they were on a national scale (A good high school friend and his father were majority stock owners at the time). I especially like it with a steak. I'm addicted to St. Arnold's Lawnmower and Summer Pils right now.
My current A-list - if you try any of these you will never say that sam adams or shiner is good beer again: Rochefort Trappistes 10 Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock Southampton Grand Cru Westmalle Dubbel Dogfish Head Raison D Etre Westmalle Tripel Hacker-Pschorr Animator Southampton May Bock Spezial Rauchbier Southern Tier Jah-va Imperial Coffee Stout Stone Imperial Russian Stout Augustiner Maximator Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Keizer This is just of the ones I've tried, I can name a few hundred more that I would like to try but haven't been able to yet, but I'm sure this list would change accordingly.
im just about drunk and im on that cream stout now it's actually pretty good. really dark beer. has a little chocolate/coffee after taste to it. sounds nasty, but its' actually pretty good
I had a dog named Michelob when I was a kid (but we just called him Mick). And I like Shiner. It's not my FAVORITE (I'll take Guinness/Dos Equis/Ziegenbock/Red Stripe over it), but it's definitely drinkable. But I like my beer to be a MEAL. And Guinness is a meal in a bottle.
Shiner used to have a summer brew...i haven't seen it in the stores, but that was really good stuff. Harp or Dos Equis for lager. Guinness as a staple. a host of others brews from Fat Tire to St. Arnold's on the side. Sam is exactly right...Sam is a great gateway to better beers. It's like their mission in life. "But down your freaking Bud Light...give us a try...and then try all this other stuff that's a ton better."
I use to love Samuel Adams, but I noticed that light beer tasted like vinegar after drinking Samuel Adams. Try it. Drink a few Samuel Adams and then drinking any light beer.
amen. i am absolutely a beer snob. i don't drink beer constantly. so when i do, i prefer it to be good!
Sam Adams is great for the beginner, I suppose. Shiner Bock (post 1990) is the worst "beer" ever created. That crap is 100% corn mash with caramel color added. Y'all need to experiment more... Don't believe the hype.
I used to love Bock before 1990. The first time I went back to Houston after moving to new york (1991) I had a bock and right away I could tell it was different. I talked to a friend who knows these things and he said the reason it tasted different is because Shiner changed the vats from glass lined to metal lined during the brewing process and thats why it tasted different. It just wasn't the same.
