Reposting my question from the Mike Miller thread in this thread: Is there any way that the Heat could spend all of their capspace on free agents and then somehow get over the cap and have access to the MLE? Or is the MLE/LLE out of the question for a team in Miami's situation?
But is there any way for them to get over the cap? I know they would have to sign their own players to get over the cap, since free agents can't be signed over the cap (obviously). So is there any way they can finagle their way into somehow signing Wade's contract after signing some other free agents, putting them over the cap and giving them access to the MLE? Basically, is there any way that they could somehow obtain the MLE this offseason?
Actually, it's in the Timberwolves' best interest to suck next year and then get REALLY good in 2011-12. The Clippers own the Wolves' first round pick, which is top-10 protected in 2011 and then completely UNPROTECTED in 2012. I think Rubio can be a star. I think Johnson, Love and Beasley could each be borderline All-Star caliber players, depending on whether any/all of them reach their potential. Flynn is just meh. Brewer, Webster, Sessions, Pekovic and (no joke) Darko are all quality NBA players. I sure hope we don't end up having the same conversations about Rubio that we had with Arvydas Sabonis: "How great would he have been if only he came to the NBA in his prime?"
No. None. Zero. Zilch. The INSTANT the Miami Heat opened up ANY cap room, they lost their MLE, their LLE and any (non-minimum) trade exceptions they may have had.
Sorry, but Love and Beasley won't be borderline All-Stars anytime soon. I think this is extreme wishful thinking. Love isn't talented enough and (like many NBA players) Beasley doesn't have the ability to focus for 82 games during a regular season. To me, Rubio is a wild-card. No idea on Johnson yet. Not trying to be negative, but Minny's present and future don't look that great, especially if Rubio doesn't sign on. I expect Beasley's stats to improve because he's on such a sorry team with no expectations. It's a perfect opportunity for him to pad stats because there will be no pressure, nobody will be watching and nobody will care. The perfect place for him in the NBA.
I was never a beasley fan. He's a tweener big time, but not enough of one to cause matchup problems. He's a 6'8 tweener that is not explsive or ultra athletic. Kinda like rodney white whem he came out.
Agreed. You asked WHICH players could develop into stars. I don't think they all will. Just that each one of those guys COULD be a borderline All-Star, approaching the level of a Kevin Martin or an Andre Iguodala. Not quite an All-Star. It's a total crapshoot. But I think Kahn may have just made a move that even HE couldn't screw up. Such talent for so cheap! Amazing.
Beasley has Eddie Griffin-esque mental issues. I think the last place where he can recover is in freaking Minnesota. This could be where he fades into oblivion.
On the cool, i like darko on that team. I saw him play last year more than a few times and the guy is still young and talented. I think back in the day, d-league wouldve worked wondeers for him with his limited playing experience.
Traded Player exceptions count against cap. So they don't really have anything more than they have under the cap.
Love could definitely be an all star. He can easily average 20 and 10 if given the minutes. He's a superb offensive rebounder for his size/athleticism and can really shoot it (even from three). He's a smart player and can really pass. I love this dude. He just needs minutes.
not just a bag of chips. it's a bag of chips and the right to swap picks. the swap is going to be 1-6 and a #30. which means miami is trading a former # 2 flop for a future #1-6 and a bag of chips. Not a bad trade for miami.
