It's how close Westbrook and Durant are, which means if Durant leaves OKC, it means Westbrook is probably leaving too.

Dwight with all his fun and smiles, did not choose his home town and AAU buddy when the option is there. And the Hawks and Josh then is miles better than Rox and Beasley now.

 

Here's a rough estimate of what a roster with Durant, Harden, and a third max player could look like:

Estimated Cap Room for 2016 is $89MM

The max Kevin Durant could make is 30% of the salary cap. So that's $26.7MM

Assuming Dwight opts out, and the Rockets give DMo a QO, and do not give TJ a QO:

These players will be under contract:
Brewer: $7.6MM
Ariza: $7.8MM
Bev: $6MM
KJ: $3.3MM
Dekker: $1.72MM
Capela: $1.3MM
Harrell: $1M
Harden: $16.8MM
Dmo: $6.2MM (CAP HOLD), Restricted FA
Beasley: $$1.3MM (team option, vet min)
---------------------------
adds up to $53.0MM including DMo

Left with $36MM in cap space left.

Now Rockets sign Durant for $26.7 MM, left with $9.3MM.

Assuming Rockets trade away Brewer, Ariza, and KJ for no incoming salary (probably easy to do for Ariza and KJ, but not easy for Brewer). That gives the Rockets an extra $18.7 MM minus $2MM in incomplete roster cap holds, making the total of $26.0 MM in cap space.

That's enough to offer a max to Mike Conley, Horford, Batum, Barnes, or Parsons.

Assuming we sign Horford for $25MM, that leave $1MM in cap space while still holding DMo's Bird Rights. With that, the Rockets can go over the cap to sign DMo.

Let's say Rockets sign DMo for $15MM. That makes Rockets' salary $97.8M. The projected luxury tax level is $108 Million with $112 hard cap apron. Then the Rockets are left with following:

Harden /min
Durant /Dekker /min
DMo /Harrell /Beasley
Horford /Capela

That starting lineup looks formidable, but the bench is ugly. The Rockets will be above the salary cap, but $10MM below the luxury tax line and $14MM below the apron. So the Rockets can use non-taxpayer MLE ($5.6MM), bi-annual exception ($2.2MM), and minimum salarys to fill out the rest of the roster. If the Rockets use both the MLE, BAE, and 4 minimum to fill out the 15man roster, that brings the total to $107.6 Million, just right below the luxury tax.

So it's not totally unfeasible to have 3 max players and still keep some depth. However, the Rockets will hopefully attract quality FA for MLE and BAE money.

If the Rockets don't extend a qualifying offer to him, then the calculations will be a little different. The Rockets could keep one of (KJ, Brewer, Ariza) and still offer a 3rd max. Also the Rockets will have the room MLE ($2.898MM) instead of the non-tax payer MLE.

 

Which Dwight contract are you talking about?

If you're talking about 2008, when Dwight got his first non-rookie contract, Atlanta had Josh Smith, but they weren't that great. They finished the previous season 37-45 and lost to the Celtics in the first round. The Hawks were not miles better than the current Rockets.

If you're talking about the 2nd contract in 2013 when Dwight came to Houston, the Hawks finish the 2012-2013 season with a record of 44-38 and lost in the first round. The Hawks didn't even sign Josh Smith. They let him go to Detroit.

Dwight didn't really have a great chance to join with Josh Smith during his contract years. I guess they could have tried to team up together in Detroit and try to turn around a franchise that had missed playoffs 4 years in a row. That's pretty different from joining the Rockets that already has a great player in Harden and fairly recent success.

I like you plan, although i would prefer to somehow convince Howard to stay for a discount, doesn't need to be huge, but enough to allow us some room to get more quality depth for the bench. Of course this is easier said than done.

Fill in the blanks, who would you try to sign with the MLE and BAE? which vets would you target?

Zach Lowe said that teams are assuming a 92M cap. And I believe KD's max is 25M for the current tier he is in. Same with Horford.

You can add Goudelock to the bench since Rockets have him at N/G, Team Option for next season at vet min. With DMo's back issue, I could see the Rockets being able to keep him for around 12M (versus 15), since he will be an RFA and teams might be reluctant to shell out 15M per. That RFA status will help. Rockets as usual, will let the market play out on that one.

If the Rockets got KD+AH, they could find a way to add bench depth via vets.

 

Zero chance Howard stays for any discount. If the Rockets get lucky with KD+AH, then Dwight is gone.

Jared Dudley would be the type of player the Rockets should look at for bench depth. Can play the 3/4 and is a good locker room guy. He would be needed if Ariza was moved out.

 

I don't think the Rockets can use cap space PLUS the MLE in the same offseason. If we use cap space we are limited to vet minimum deals and the BAE.
