Chuck has not maxed out yet. He will be even better for us next year under Adelman in a more free flowing uptempo game with guards releasing and him grabbing the defensive board, getting the ball out quickly, and running up the floor on the break. He's gonna get his boards, in fact his rebounding numbers are going to increase with increased possessions, and his point production is going to increase because he moves so well without the ball and gets up and down the court so well. Sure, he's a garbage man and a role player, but he's just going into his 3rd season after only playing a season and a half. He will be better on both ends of the court next season. He's better than Varejao all the way around. His bball iq is infinitely higher. Varejao is knucklehead dressed up as a hustle player. Some stupid team will overpay him.
i agree. hayes is too undersized for a starter. as the backup pf, i would endorse that wholeheartedly. as for varejao, it depends what it will cost us.
Varejao is much better than Chuck. Not even close. Ask all 30 GMs which one they would take and it would be 30-0 in favor of Varejao. Not only is he better than Chuck right now, his upside is much higher. Chuck's physical limitations of being short & having zero hops and his incredibly bad shooting motion give him a very low ceiling. Tell me the next time Josh Howard skies over Varejao's back and snags a rebound like it was taking candy from a baby. If Varejao had a coach with at least some competence in teaching offense, maybe he would become more than just a hustle player.
Interesting... how is he going to handle the PF's in the Western Conference... and how is this thread even getting more than 1 star? ughhhh
I think its dead now, who knows? <a href="/nba/rumors/post/Cavs-want-Varejao-and-Pavlovic-to-return?urn=nba,36756">Cavs want Varejao and Pavlovic to return</a></h4> <p class="date">Monday, Jun 18, 2007 1:51 pm EDT</p> </div> <div class="bd"> <div class="small"><img src="http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_rumors/ept_sports_rumors-436523096-1182189066.jpg?ymKoFr9CI7xGEOwP" alt="Anderson Varejao" border="0" height="160" hspace="0" vspace="0" width="160"><p class="credit">Getty Images</p></div><p>The <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/cle/">Cleveland Cavaliers</a> face the prospect of losing two important ingredients from this year's group that advanced to the NBA Finals: forward <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3847/">Anderson Varejao</a> and guard <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3722/">Sasha Pavlovic</a>. </p><p>Both will be restricted free agents this summer, but Cavs general manager Danny Ferry and head coach Mike Brown want both players back.</p><p>"We'll go through the process (negotiations can begin July 1), whatever that is with their agents, to see that happen,'' Ferry said.<br></p> <p class="source">Source: <span class="source-link"><a href="http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/basketball/nba/cleveland_cavaliers/17377990.htm?source=rss&channel=ohio_cleveland_cavaliers">Akron Beacon-Journal</a><a target="_blank" href="http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/basketball/nba/cleveland_cavaliers/17377990.htm?source=rss&channel=ohio_cleveland_cavaliers"><img src="http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/nt/ic/ut/bsc/newwin12_1.gif" alt="" border="0" height="12" hspace="0" vspace="0" width="12"></a>
We have so few options at the four barring a big trade that I would leap at the Varejao option. He is long and athletic enough to protect Yao defensively, active on the glass, moves fairly well without the ball, and can give us plenty of minutes at the five, especially in more fast paced games. He can't shoot a lick, he flops, and he needs some better conditioning if we want more minutes, but I wouldn't mind him for MLE. I doubt it happens, but I wouldn't be opposed. Besides, our mid-level has gotten us such great players as Lucas, Spanoulis, Wells, Swift, Mo Taylor and Shandon Anderson over the years. Is Varejao really a worse option than them? The free agent crop at the four is remarkably thin this year and I think a rotation of Varejao, Hayes, and Novak would be just fine for the regular season. It's better than Hayes/Howard and it's better than Howard/Bowen/Witherspoon and those two rotations got us 50+ wins.
Speaking of Varejao, you won't forget this. LOL at 5:46, Yao's first "f**k" on TV. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zd9Ip1YzabU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zd9Ip1YzabU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> BTW, this was a nice blow out game by the Rockets. Wish this was in the 2007 NBA Finals.
IMO, that doesn't mean the potential for a deal is gone at all. Of course the team is going to tell the public that it wants to retain its contributing players... it could easily be a smokescreen.
True, very true, I would prefer this direction over a Ron Artest like direction. Carlito could be good for us.
Put me on the "go for it" side of this argument. All things considered, Varejao is a very viable option. He's tall, athletic, and energetic. The concensus is these are all the things we need at the 4. Besides, aren't we trying to upgrade? He is certainly that.
The sort of Power Forwards that he needs to be able to guard in the West are beyond his ability and experience. He is a flopper and foul prone It is about time that we stopped playing about with the team and get serious about getting the right players for the job. If we are going to get us a decent Playmaker Point Guard and a tall strong athletic Power Forward who can play their positions on a championship contender, we need to be prepared to trade some assets, even Battier if called upon to do so, if the return trade is worth it. Protecting Battier and getting us second or third rate players will not build a championship team. We have attempted this very same thing twice in recent years and each time we have to have a remake but repeat our mistakes every offseason.
This team has a very simple problem: excess of viable talent in the backcourt, no talent in the frontcourt. Do we wish we had a better point guard? Yes, but getting any power forward worth his salt is more important right now that gutting our roster to upgrade the point guard spot. As I see it, here are our rotation players at the 1, 2, & 3: PG: James, Alston SG: McGrady, Snyder, Head SF: Battier, Bonzi That's too many. Assuming Bonzi comes back, we don't have enough minutes to go around. Now, unless we can get a treasure trove for Rafer we probably want to hold on to him for the moment, simply because we only have two proven players on the roster really capable of playing the point. McGrady is obviously untouchable (as much because we wouldn't get good value for him in return even if we tried). That means we have our draft pick, Sura's contract, and one, possibly two of the following players to use to acquire a legit power forward: Head, Snyder, Battier, Bonzi. If we had a choice, we would of course keep Battier, because he can play SOME minutes at the 4, at least. It's refreshing to step back and realize that while we do have a big hole, we really do have some expendable assets to use because two things happened: we got Mike James, and Bonzi is probably staying. We have stuff to use. We're not in too bad a spot. And as I've said already, I think Varejao would fill that need adequately, as would Gooden and Wilcox.
