Alan Greenspan chairs the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve Board of Governors sets the fed funds rate and the discount rate. They do not set rates for treasuries. The market and all economic participants set these rates. Treasuries are the benchmark used in almost all large debt transactions. Alan Greenspan is incapable of fixing rates for the broader market. This is a common misconception amongst people who have very very little understanding of financial markets, like yourself.
There is a ring of truth to this. But also recognize that itis not uncommon for the liberal view to be expressed along with the most scathing assumptions regarding US motives. Consistently negative, unfounded assumptions can understandably raise the issue of anti-Americanism.
HP, perhaps I am just misunderstanding the rhetoric and reading into it what isn't there. But when I hear them quote Iraqi officials as if what they say is fact and then not even give the American response, I take that as hatred for America. When speakers of the show talk about how this war is just about "imperialism" and "colonialism" I make the same assumption. Then they "report" about how the US let the museums and hospitals get looted, while the Oil Ministry was protected, insinuating that the US only cared about protecting oil (without mentioning that the oil ministry was damaged, or that the US intends to give all oil revenue to Iraqis.) And somehow all their biases and misstatements of fact make the US look like an arrogant, evil, murderous country. But maybe I am mistaking that rhetoric, and it isn't hatred. But in the very least it is ignorance. As for my posts, I certainly don't mean to equate hatred of the war or Bush with hatred of America. I myself have my criticisms of Bush and the war (see my first response to BJ). Bush is by no means perfect. I support him, but I remember when Clinton bombed Iraq for 4 days and had a town hall meeting- some guy got up and spewed stuff about how this is more of racist America bombing "brown people." I had the same reaction then as now, even though they were criticizing Clinton. I try to differentiate between criticism of the politicians and criticism of the country as a whole. Anyways, thanks for the viewpoint on 90.1. It's quite an interesting station, that's for sure. At first I thought NPR was really left wing, but after listening to it a while it got boring, so I needed something new.
Do you honestly think they are completely unrelated. Where does the federal reserve get its money that it loans to banks. The Treausry. Why would the fed only require banks to pay back 1.50% interest rates when it would have to pay back 5.50% interest rates to the Treasury.
Oski, look at my response to HP. That is the type of rhetoric I am talking about. And Cohen's post makes my point better. The constant negative and unfounded assumptions about the US motives makes me think there is a strong dislike for the US. But this is among the fringe. In my initial post, instead of saying "some liberals" I should have said "fringe liberals." By the way, I tend to listen and read stuff that I disagree about as often as I watch stuff that I agree with. I rarely watch FoxNews. I more often watch CNN, listen to NPR, and read Slate. Maybe I'm a masochist...
I really shouldn't but ... Just as we should not confuse exploding federal deficits and the 2001 recession followed by a jobless recovery during GWB's tenure with sound economic policy by the GWB team.
Amy Goodman's nickname should be "Schmuck-etta". I cannot stand her "reporting". I love KPFT and I support it, but her show makes me instantly pop in a CD. The music on KPFT makes up for some of the often mindless news/commentary.
Is she the one who does the reporting during mornings and rush hour? I really haven't listened to their music yet. It has to be a lot better than the lame stuff the regular stations play.
She isn't local...she is part of the national news/commentary that they run. KPFTs music is alot better than the other stations. If you want to listen to KPFTs music, check out "Lone Star Jukebox" at 9AM Saturdays, "Joe's Roadhouse" on Saturday afternoons, and check out the series of blues shows they run on Sundays from 6AM to 6PM. To me, KPFTs Sunday shows are the best radio in Houston. But then again...I'm a blues freak, so it's only natural for me to think that!
Jorge. I know you were being cute. Even so, it's nice to know you've never been ticketed for anything. That's quite a feat, especially considering your whole anger management problem. My ticket wasn't a moving violation, though. It was an expired inspection sticker. It expired when my car wasn't running, which is a recurring problem for me. As a lowly 'thespian' I can only afford $500 cars, which inevitably spend much time in the shop. Got it fixed, got insurance, was meaning to get inspected next day and got the ticket. Got it inspected a couple days later and had the ticket dismissed. Thanks for your concern. It's very touching.
Mr. Clutch, what I suggest is a in dash cd player that is mp3 capable. Why listen to the radio when you can put in a cd with 150 songs on it?
DJs are better than static CDs. 150 songs is not enough for every day. Mr. Clutch, yes, Amy Goodman is in the mornings, but she is Pacifica Radio's national syndicated news show. Also, check out "World Cafe" and the local dj (that RM Tex might not like) "Soular Grooves" with DJ Sun on Saturday nights...9-11pm.' He is hands-down the best DJ or show for "acid jazz."
Its obvious you dont like the people..and may or may not hate the country..but its clear you do like the grass.
there's a new signature for rockHEAD!! zzhiggins and his band of boys own cc.net. We just don't realize it, yet.
So this is the thread where all the gifted and talented people hang out. Please excuse me, I must leave now.
