No its not as good, but its enjoyable. The problem is that if you are in that area, you might as well drive 15 west and go to Muellers.
It's a hair below the original. I just love the location (about 5 minutes from my house and right outside the Dell Diamond).
Sadly, I concur. Since my last post in this thread, I had two bad experiences at Kreutz's. Brisket too dry, sausage too greasy. I'm a Smitty's man now, even though they always try to sneak an extra slice of meat on the scale. Order half a pound of brisket and they'll slice 3 slices, knowing darn well it'll come in at .75 lbs and two slices is almost always .5 lbs on the money. Other than that, no complaints.
I'm glad you mentioned this. It's why I hate when people say things like "I went there once - the bbq isn't that great." and leave it at that. BBQ is a crapshoot even at some of the best places because everything has to be right for it to be good and every joint is going to have off days. The time of the day, as you also stated, is important. I go to a BBQ place at least 3 or 4 times minimum before I make a decision about it. Well, unless it's just horrible the first one or two times. All this being said, I've never been to the Texas Holy Land of BBQ down by Austin to try Black's, Smitty's, Kreuz, City Market, and Salt Lick. I need to make a trip. Hell, that area is like a vacation spot for BBQ lovers. I've been running around small towns looking for good chicken fried steak for the past few couple of months. Maybe I'll switch to BBQ for a bit.
I've never been, but if you're making a trip, hopefully you know they're only open 1 day of the week (Saturday) and only until they run out of meat. I think they won a Texas Monthly award for best BBQ.
It's outstanding. There's a unique spice on their brisket I can't even place. The texture was nearly perfect. The ribs and sausage were probably 8.5/10. If you consider yourself a BBQ aficionado, it's worth the experience. There's nothing like standing in line and then eating like a savage at 8:00am. Beer tastes better that time of day, too. Good luck.
