Isn't American great? Business owner getting to do whatever he wants. The good thing about America is if you don't agree, no one can make you spend your money there!

Yes, racial discrimination is great. Spoken like a cop.

June 19 1865 is when Texas first got the news of the emancipation - which is why its really considered a "Texas Holiday"

Would be interesting if people would be dumb enough to send him money like they did that pizza restaurant in Indiana.

I've never given it much thought, but it is surprising to me that there isn't an official federal holiday (although I thought Emancipation Day kind of was, but apparently it is DC only).

    Meh... maybe in Texas.

I am sure it matters to some black folks, but in Chicago and Cincy I haven't seen a single mention of the date or holiday up here. The few times I have brought the holiday up over the years up here, I have always gotten blank stares.

I agree. The defeat of the Confederacy and the abolition of slavery is a seminal event in US history, and we don't have a federally recognized holiday for it? It can be Juneteenth or the official surrender in April. But we should have something. I can understand how it might be a lightning rod for unrest during Reconstruction or Jim Crow. But, I think we can celebrate in 2015 -- and get a day off of work to do it.

I didn't say all Black folks... I grew up in NY and the Black folks I was around celebrated it. But I'm sure it's places that don't. Maybe Colorado is one of them.
