Man, TJ is in such a freakout mode he let a whopper like this one slip. Dude must need a new keyboard by now.
Me neither, his campaign organization has been first rate; my reference was to Obama's prior record of being a State Rep and a U.S Senator. They are very prestigious and honorable positions but they are not largely executive in nature.
My guess on this particular quote -- if I were to give him the benefit of the doubt -- is that persisting in criticism is fruit of sin and an indication that your heart is not in the right place and not in accordance with the will of God in loving your neighbor as yourself, and all that jazz. I think it'd be jumping to conclusions to think he was saying that God was enforcing obedience by sending naysayers to hell. In general, I think it is very easy to misconstrue things said in a sermon, especially with journalists who are not regular churchgoers accustomed to Christian-speak. A lot of the quotes that are supposed to be wacky sound familiar to me, and even possibly reasonable depending on the context. My impression is that this pastor does not have the best education, and may be a bit more off the mark than Wright, but not really wacky. At least no more wacky than your standard devout Christian.
Yeah I agree republicans are smoking some of that good stuff...this was a very bad pick! They could have appointed a better women then this.
Juan, both of my parents are ordained ministers and I literally grew up inside of churches and I've heard it all. Criticism of a president or a pastor leading to hell is a new one for me. In fact, I've never even heard an evangelical go quite that far before.
I wonder if she believes the Native Americans who dwelled in Alaska and were brutally dominated by Imperialists are going to hell for not accepting Jesus Christ.
Elaborate. Oh... you did. Is that what was done here? She was asked to speak... after being elected... and she used the name of Jesus for political gain? I'd have to be fair like I was with Jeremiah Wright and hear things in CONTEXT before I made a judgment... But that's me. As a believer though, I could imagine a Romans 13 message out of context being taken horribly wrong.
Wild apocalyptic fantasies? Delusions of God commanding you to go to war (or build oil pipelines)? Honestly, this kind of **** scares the bejesus out of me.
I wasn't trying to comfort anyone. I was just offering my unsolicited take on the craziness the OP referred to. I think the quotes sound typical of Christians. They may be wrong or misguided (or completely on the mark, I guess), but not really beyond the pale. For someone who thinks Christianity, generally, is wrong and/or crazy and/or dangerous, the comments may be crazy -- but then that someone probably was never considering voting McCain/Palin anyway.
