And, may I ask, what do you propose would constitute a non-lame Sweet 16 for a Battle of the Bands?(being serious, just curious)

I'm about 90% sure one of them *cough Led Zep cough* will win. Beatles and Stones will be the only challengers to those bands you listed. For the Rolling Stones fans out there: are all their best songs on the two 40 Licks CD's? Thanks
Bracket A: 1) The Beatles 4) The Gary Cherone and Sammy Hagar eras actually should have disqualified VH for the tournament and resulted in having them placed on Sudden Death suspension status. The artistic equivalent of the coach murdering a NCAA official. 3) The Doors 2) I think Oliver Stone's lame film and that stupid tour with the Cult's Ian Astbury has tarnished the memory of a great band. Outside of a seldom-heard Velvet Underground, the Doors brought a darkness and danger to the 60's that just wasn't there. Forget the leather pants and crying indians...the Doors were great. Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones 12) They had a run from "Beggar's Banquet" to "Exile on Main St" that is as good as it gets. They have at least 10 great albums despite 25 plus years of crap. Incredibly, Soundgarden are even more overrated than the Stones! The Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss before them do what Soundgarden did a thousand times better. A crap live band who had maybe 10 good songs. Out! 6) Nirvana 2) Upset! The Who have killed their legacy even more than the Stones, or the Beach Boys by being such whores. I will give Nirvana the nod for sheer impact. The Who were transcendantly good at their best (and Deep Purple at their most mediocre), but I can't say they were definitvely better than several people from the same time period. Nirvana, on the other hand, stands out from the 90's. The last great rock band. Certainly, the last rock band that actually made dent in the collective consciousness. The Who never did that. Bracket C: 1) Led Zeppelin 4) Led Zeppelin easily. If you don't count lyrics Zep is a title contender. One of the few rock and roll bands that locked into a groove like they did, while also being astonishingly diverse. The lyrics were sort of, um, well, dorky, but that doesn't matter really when the rest is so good. 11) 7) The Ramones The Ramones by a nose. CCR was a solid band (though not in the same league as the Band!), but the Ramones were brilliantly stupid! They put fun and girl groups and leather back into music and helped to deflate a lot of the mid 70's prog dorkiness in music. Love 'em! Bracket D: 1) 4) U2 Pink Floyd are nothing to sneeze at, but I think U2 at their best were just as sonically interesting and have had the most consistent long career of the big groups. U2 by Bono's sizable nose. 11) The Police 2) Upset! The Police eek out a win over Queen because they never recorded "Hot Space," wore baseball hats with blue horns on them and wrote a bunch of great, literate pop songs. Don't blame the Police for the abomination of Sting's solo career. Queen were great, but they were bloated and kind of ridiculous. The Police were streamlined and ridiculous. : )
Bracket A: 1) The Beatles 2) The Eagles Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones 6) Nirvana Bracket C: 1) Led Zeppelin 7) The Ramones Bracket D: 4) U2 2) Queen

rockets-#1 pick up "Hot Rocks 1964-1971." Haven't heard 40 licks, but Hot Rocks, IMHO, is the best compilation I've heard of the Stones.
