Bracket A: 1) The Beatles -Easy. Few, if any, have had more influence. 3) The Doors Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones -Tougher, but the Stones are arguably the best Rock & Roll group ever. The Who were also terrific, but you have to give it up for the Stones. Both were/are (?) fantastic live. 2) The Who Bracket C: 1) Led Zeppelin -Not close, imo. 7) The Ramones Bracket D: 1) Pink Floyd -One of the hardest choices. I just can't forget seeing Floyd tour for Dark Side of the Moon at the Music Hall (tickets- $3.50!), and having my first surround sound experience. (although Jimi made it sound like it swirled around you!) Imagine the album, except it's several times better. Not all groups could sound live like they did on their albums. Those that could always far surpassed the recording. (duh! sounds logical, but several groups just didn't match live what they could put out on record, at least unless they had an unusually great set. Crosby Stills Nash & Young are a good example. Zappa and the Mothers, along with Jimi & the Experience, are good examples of groups that far excelled live anything that made it to vinyl. 2) Queen Manny, I'll get that e-mail to you... I'm just very slow, and unreliable, about such things. Ask Mango!
Bracket A: 1) The Beatles 3) Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones 2) Bracket C: 1) Led Zeppelin 7) Bracket D: 1) Pink Floyd 2)
Bracket A: 1) The Beatles 3) The Doors I voted against the Beatles last time 'cause Van Halen just rocked harder. I don't see either of these bands as rocking out that hard, so I'll look at the overall package and amount of good works they did. The Beatles totally crush the Doors in that regard. Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones 2) The Who The Stones suck for taking out Soundgarden. The Who sucks for taking out Nirvana, two of my favorite bands and last of the 90's in this tourney. I just got 40 licks am really liking it, so I'm gonna have to go with the Stones here. I don't know enough from the Who yet, but maybe if I'm asked this question in a week I'll say the Who is better, but for now... Bracket C: 1) Led Zeppelin 7) The Ramones Oh man, this matchup is laughable! The Ramones made most their music off 2 or 3 chords was it? Led Zeppelin is about as diverse as it gets; they made every sound they did sound oh so good. To get a sample of their diversity, go from "Rock and Roll" to "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" to "For Your Life" to "Since I've Been Loving You" to "Dancing Days" to "That's the Way" to "You Shook Me" to "Hots On For Nowhere" to "Fool In the Rain." Gosh, just listen to all those different sounds. TOO GOOD! Bracket D: 1) Pink Floyd 2) Queen Out of all the matchups, I know the least about this one. If Floyd's other stuff is around as good as Dark Side, then they win by a large margin. For the most part, but there are still some bands that I listen to (that released records this century) that are doing their best to keep it alive. Some of them include Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, Jet. Thank God for those bands; we'd be lost without them. Two of them are American, too - that's nice considering someone's point about the best bands being British. Other bands to note that are around today and good: Green Day (my 3rd favorite band), Incubus, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Linkin Park, RHCP, Queens of the Stone Age, 311, and Coldplay. Haha alright, I'll plan to do that. Right now I'm concentrating on Forty Licks as I mentioned before, Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker's greatest hits, and Dark Side. Seeing some of bands get to the point they did is making me go back and see what these respective bands had to offer. So, awesome thread, as it's proving for a great learning experience. After those Pink Floyd albums, I'll be going onto The Who, Queen, and the Ramones.
Last scoring update for several hours - through rockets #1 picks: The Beatles 54, The Doors 11 The Rolling Stones 40, The Who 24 Led Zeppelin 49, The Ramones 16 Pink Floyd 37, Queen 26 Voting for this round ends at 10:00 p.m. CST tonight.
I can't believe The Who is losing to the Stones! Kids... Go rent "The Kids Are Alright" and "Gimme Shelter" and tell me whom the better band was.
I love both bands. I voted for the Who. One of the main deciding factors in this for me was the Stones' Rock & Roll Circus. It was made by the Stones but they didn't want it released because the Who came on and stole the show. After all this time it has finally been released. The Who did give the best performance without a doubt.
FranchiseBlade, I was curious about 'RnR Circus. I recently read a biography on Kieth Moon and there was mention by the author how the Who had outperformed the Stones, and that the movie did not also see wide release (if any?) Anyway, I too heard RnR Circus was now out on dvd and went by Lou's to find it. The was no mention of 'The Who' anywhere on the sleave; so I passed.
There are several places I could have seen it, but I don't remember which one. There was some strange Stones documentary I watched many years ago. It may have been shown on Trio, Bravo, IFC or something like that. The who did 'A Quick One While He's Away.' It may not have mentioned the Who but the DVD should have included their performance. If not check out this edition of the DVD which definitely contains it. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000621484/103-3362526-3483005?v=glance
