I am a little disapointed that Lynyrd Skynard is losing. They are in my top 10. Can someone give me a list of good Soundgarden songs. They must be pretty good if they are getting so many votes. I checked their web site and only recognized a few songs.
Soundgarden is awesome. The Best: Black Hole Sun Pretty Noose Burden In My Hand Fell On Black Days Spoonman Loud Love Great Songs: Dusty No Attention Head Down Outshined Mailman Limo Wreck Like Suicide 4th of July Superunknown Slaves and Bulldozers Superunknown Hands All Over Noteworthy: Room A Thousand Years Wide Switch Opens Overfloater My Wave Bleed Together Rusty Cage Face Pollution Nothing To Say Somewhere Let Me Drown I could organize that list better, but I think it shall suffice for now. Anyways, does that answer your question?
Haha, I love talking music with you, Manny. I will definitely try out what you've said. Don't get me wrong I like the Who and Queen, but I've only been subjected to their hits. I'll go search for the Queen thread, I know I'll find out all I need to know there. If I can give you some advice, though, try out Green Day. Like I said, I got all 129 songs by them. I acknowledge Led Zep as the best band ever, as you said, so someone with that stance would know a little something about good music. Green Day is that. If anyone wants to hear a good drummer, Tre Cool (their drummer, I don't like his fake name, either, but regardless) is an amazing drummer. That gives me an idea for a thread which I will post shortly....
I don't think STP or Hootie copied Vedder and the other two I never really listened to. I think it's more about record execs looking to promote similar sounding acts to make money while the trend is hot than it is bands trying to copy PJ. Seattle was just the new Athens, GA at the time. Some of the best music in Seattle during those years wasn't grunge and those acts didn't get picked up. Pete Droge for example, great singer/songwriter never really went anywhere. BTW is Hootie in that BK ad now, or is it someone that just looks like him?
Which kinda proves my point. Notice how Hootie and Scott Weiland sound nowhere near like Eddie these days. Back then, however, it was uncanny. Pearl Jam was a lot more influential than most people think.

I agree 100% on that. rockets #1, I have "Dookie" (which is great) and also had at one time the album that had "Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)" (or something like that) but sold it for like 4 bucks because I didn't like it like I did with "Dookie". Green Day is a solid punk band - maybe the only true punk band out there today. HOWEVER, look at who they are up against in Queen. Freddie Mercury is one of the top 5 frontmen in all of rock music and has an unbelievable vocal range. Brian May is easily in the top 20 of rock guitarists ever. Roger Taylor is also in the top 20 when it comes to rock drummers, and John Deacon was an absolute MONSTER on bass (definite top 10). What hurt Queen was that they were very diverse and used all kinds of different styles. Blondie was a lot like that too but their musicians (with the exception of Clem Burke, the drummer) could not come close to the technical brilliance of Queen's members, IMO (of course). If you can get past the campyness and silliness, you will find some great stuff. I mean listen to "Another One Bites the Dust", "Bohemian Rhapsody", and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". NONE of those songs sound anything like each other, but they were all great songs. That right there is a hallmark of a great band. As for the Who, John Entwhistle has been routinely considered one of the 3 (maybe the greatest) rock bassists of all-time. Other than John Bonham and Neal Peart, no one was better on the drums in a rock band than Keith Moon. Roger Daltrey is right up there with Freddie Mercury as one of rock's all-time great frontmen. Which leaves this one guy named Townsend - you might have heard of him , truly one of rock music's greatest songwriters and an above-average guitarist. When you can honestly say that Pete Townsend is the weakest musician in your band, then you have one helluva of a band.
Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones 8) R.E.M. 12) Soundgarden 4) KISS 6) Nirvana 3) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 7) Red Hot Chili Peppers 15) Collective Soul Bracket D: 1) Pink Floyd 8) Depeche Mode 5) Pearl Jam 4) U2 6) Fleetwood Mac 3) Metallica 10) The Cars 2) Queen
Eh, I did it off the top of my head. I forgot. Also, I'd put most of the noteworthy songs into the great category also, but I'm trying to get new people into them so don't wanna push too hard. Exactly. Scott Weiland copied no one, Fatty. He's the man, and his voice is unique and brilliant.
YES, YES, YES! Thank you! You are without question a true music expert. They are the only true punk band out there today. Like I said, I'm gonna try getting into the Who and Queen. I'll most likely thank you later.
You see rockets #1, I like a lot of bands. Just because I vote, for example, Nirvana over the Beach Boys doesn't mean I hate the Beach Boys. I have "Pet Sounds" and it is one of the greatest albums ever. How great it is? Great enough that the Beatles and their producer, Sir George Martin, said that "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was their attempt at trying to equal or better it and they felt that they had not succeeded. A lot of these matchups could go either way for me, but I go with the band that I think is better (which normally means which one do I have the most CDs of ). Okay, update time (through Vengeance's picks): Bracket B: Rolling Stones 50, Cake 6 REM 41, Bon Jovi 14 Soundgarden 31, Lynyrd Skynyrd 24 KISS 41, Thin Lizzy 13 Beach Boys 27, Nirvana 27 Tom Petty 46, B-52's 9 RHCP 44, Deep Purple 11 The Who 52, Collective Soul 3 Bracket D: Pink Floyd 55, Goo Goo Dolls 0 Depeche Mode 30, The Band 25 Pearl Jam 29, Sex Pistols 25 U2 40, Radiohead 14 The Police 39, Fleetwood Mac 16 Metallica 41, Blondie 13 The Cars 31, Motley Crue 22 Queen 43, Green Day 12
Bracket B: 1) The Rolling Stones-winner, not even close 16) Cake 8) R.E.M. 9) Bon Jovi-winner 5) Lynyrd Skynyrd-winner 12) Soundgarden 4) KISS-winner 13) Thin Lizzy 6) Nirvana-winner, smells like teen spirit gives them the nod 11) The Beach Boys 3) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers-winner 14) The B-52's 7) Red Hot Chili Peppers-winner 10) Deep Purple 2) The Who 15) Collective Soul-upset special Bracket D: 1) Pink Floyd-winner, bad draw for goo goo dolls 16) The Goo Goo Dolls 8) Depeche Mode-winner 9) The Band 5) Pearl Jam-winner 12) The Sex Pistols 4) U2-winner 13) Radiohead 6) Fleetwood Mac-winner 11) The Police 3) Metallica-winner 14) Blondie 7) Motley Crue-winner 10) The Cars 2) Queen-winner, tough draw for green day 15) Green Day
It sounds like Manny's criterion for good bands is different than mine. I rate bands and even musicianship not on purely technical ability (which usually means playing really ostentatiously), but on tone, emotion and writing skill of the songs as a whole. By this filter, I would say the Band were better musicians than Queen were, for example. I find it hard to apprecitate the components of the songs like they are mechanical parts. Badass guitar solos seems quaint and out of place in 2005....like seeing a reproduction of the Sphynx at the mall. Those are my biases. Anyway, if attitude and emotion weren't more important than anything else (other than marketing ; ) then King Crimson and Kansas would much more influential. I don't care that The Ramones played less chords in their entire career than the average Dream Theater song- they didn't have to. Some of these brackets are bit unfair, anyway. Blondie and Metallica did not inhabit the same universe...comparing them is like comparing TS Eliot and Georgetown Hoyas. I'll shut up now...
I don't know. I guess it depends on how seriously a person takes the Libertines break up. To me they are as good as it gets recently. I would put them up with the Buzzcocks now. If they manage to end their silly break-up and produce more work, and grow I would say the have the potential enter the realm of bands who only take a second tier to the Clash. I'm not just saying that because Mick Jones is their producer and speaks so highly of them either. The song Waster is probably the best punk song since the demise of the Clash IMO. If one thinks they aren't as good as Greenday that is debatable, but they are certainly a true punk band. The technicality is whether they are really around today since they are currently broken up. But I'm an optimist and don't feel that the break up will be all that permenant provided there isn't an OD in the near future.
