This is one thing i don't like about Battier defense. Clearly, he have a chance to block Kobe's shot every single time, but he choose to block his face. WHY?? that's why Kobe keep draining shots. Blocking his face is like giving him the chance to shoot blindfolded and you know they still make those shots because it's routine for him. But when you blocked his shots...you're giving him something to think about the next time he plan to shoot. I wouldn't mention this if Battier have no chance to block his shots or if Kobe jump so high that you can't block his shot. But the fact of the matter is...Battier, many times are right there to block his shots and you see it on TV and you're scratching your head why the heck he keeps blocking his face?? To me...it's just stupid defense scheme imo. Shooters will fear you when you block his shots rather than blocking his face cuz he knows he still going to get the shot off making it okay even if he missed rather than getting embarrassed getting blocked. So imo, Kobe does not fear Battier as a result because he knows Battier does block shot.

You're wrong. It takes the defender a substantially longer amount of time to crouch, jump, AND swing his hand from his hips all the way up toward his full reach to the shooter's hands than to just stick his hand in the shooter's face without having to crouch. The difference in time between trying to block a shot and faceguarding is impossible to make up against a quick, NBA-caliber release. At that level, it's almost impossible to get your hand to the ball quick enough to block it; almost everytime, the closest you can get to a block is your hand halfway between his head and the ball; however, it is more useful for the defender to put his hand directly in front of the face rather than his wrist due to the larger surface area, so Battier just goes for the hand-in-the-face rather than the block since it's almost impossible to get a block anyway.
