Not surprising. Defensive teams are voted by coaches, and they are largely reputation-oriented. Assessing defensive ability is very subjective, and I don't think most head coaches care to over-analyze it. So, they tend to settle for the guys who've been there in the past or who lead the league in rebounds/steals/blocks. You can check historically that the All-Defensive teams don't change nearly as much year-to-year as the All-NBA teams.

Bowen isn't what he was... no chance he should be in over Shane.

But hey, same thing that happened a number of years ago... Christie was 4th in DPOY voting, FIRST GUARD ON THE LIST, but Kobe and Kidd made it over him.

Makes you wonder how legit all-defensive 1st teams are (*cough* MICHAELJORDAN *cough*).

If my math is correct, Battier was the only person to receive votes from all 29 coaches. That says something!

They should have made Battier a guard and put him over Kobe, since Battier was guarding and locking Kobe up anyways. Kobe is an overrated defender.

well if you looked and what made no sense to me was that Kobe had the most number of first place votes and overall had the highest vote score along with KG who was DPOY. So it wasnt like Kobe barely made it on the team he was like a near unanimous first team choice, if anything it was bowen, duncan who barely made it.

Media doesn't vote for the All-defense teams. Coaches do.

It looks to me that he received only 20 1st and 2nd place votes. Garnett and Kobe each received 28 votes.

    guys

I wouldn't be surprised that CP is in the second team. I've had him on my fantasy team all season and he is lights out on steals, averaging around 3 this season.

Battier is listed at forward. How the hell did BB get listed as a guard?

Not surprised....I knew Battier would get snubbed.

Bowen shouldn't be 1st team, neither should Camby or Kobe.

Honestly, how is Camby the best defensive center in the league....I know about five off of the top of my head who are better defenders than he is.

Kobe is a good defender, but he is not the best SG defender in the league. He is only on their because of reputation.....

Oops! I was looking at the Chronicle article and I thought the number to the side was the number of 1st place votes, not points.

Kobe shouldn't even qualify since he doesn't have to guard Kobe.

Bullcrap. Non-deserving players get on the list because "They have to get something for this season". Garnett is supposingly the guy who turned Celtics around or is the leader of it. So he must come out of the season with at least some award. Chris Paul..... Well of course this guy won't be getting any award, so NBA put him second team just to make him feel more important.

NBA is overrating all these players. Honestly...... IMO Josh Smith deserves to be on the second team over CP, and Battier deserves to be first team over Bryant. Battier is the most underrated defender, and NBA puts him second because Battier is not a very well known player. If Battier had some offense, I bet he can be on NBA first team, because you need offense to be on the all defensive team.............

What annoys me about this is that Battier was beat out by Tim Duncan who played Center more the PF this entire season.

Is there anyone who is actually going to argue that Oberto played the center position more than Duncan?

LOL. Well, you had to expect it. How can you not include the MVP in the first defensive team. Just knock out some underrated defender that less then half of NBA fans know of, and replace him with Mr 24.
