Situation back then was totally different when we traded for Battier. At the draft of 2006:

    1) We were in the win now mode and Gay was just another unproven rookie with potential
    2) We have a defensive coach named JVG and Battier's defense was way better than Gay's
    3) We didn't know Yao/Tmac would get injuried and missed that many games
    4) We weren't expecting to have the minutes to groom a rookie like Rudy Gay
    5) JVG highly valued work ethic. Gay at the time was pictured as someone who would "disappear" from time to time while Battier was appraised as giving his 100% every night)

Getting rid of Stromile Swift made the trade a positive for the Rockets.

Just a comparison between Swift and Scola

    Swift

    PPG 8.7
    RPG 4.3
    APG 0.7
    SPG 0.2
    BPG 1.3
    FG% 0.571
    FT% 0.714
    3P% 0.000
    MPG 17.1

    Scola

    PPG 6.8
    RPG 5.3
    APG 0.9
    SPG 0.6
    BPG 0.2
    FG% 0.538
    FT% 0.524
    3P% 0.000
    MPG 19.9

Not that big a difference when you compare the two, and truthfully I think Swift also would have flourished in the Adelman offense.

Swift has never had a problem putting up nice numbers. Hell, even in his one year in Houston, he had a nice PER (14.6, which is above average for a reserve). It's the things he does poorly that don't show up in the box score that limits him.

I think it's clear we valued what Battier brings to the table a little too highly. (In terms of such a high pick for a role player).

Whoever said that the 'glue' players don't help if you don't have the talent around them is dead on.

Battier is a great guy, does a lot of little things and is a good (not great) defender and I think as the Rockets get better he will be more effective.

But the idea of a young, athletic *dependable* third scorer looks even more appealing now than it did back then (and it looked real good back then).

What Shane is giving us now is all he's ever really going to give us.

sorry for the redundancy...cd and morey were not going to draft rudy gay even if they kept the pick...it was going to be brewer or seflosha. is this clear...crystal clear?

the stupidity of the argument is crytal clear. how is this a defense. saba sucks. the fact they didn't even consider rudy, if that's your argument, make them look worse and anyone who uses this argument isn't thinking

    is this crystal clear?

    -----> :rolleyes:

It's ALWAYS been crystal. And what part of thAT "FACT" absolves from the stupity of Battier and NOT at least getting MEM's #24 pick?

Gay or Sefalosha or Brewer = potential upside plus possible inclusive depth of trading down

Battier (and no pick) = consistency (especially under Van Gundy) but not enough upside to narrow the talent gap to the WC elites.

What's "crystal clear" is they made TWO dumbass mistakes.

Battier's taken 84 3P attempts and 45 2P attempts. Adelman's called him out for taking too manys 3's.

If he's taking that many shots from the perimeter and looking for those shots it would mean he's just planting himself in ther corners and not creating movement.

Yao & Mac have called out guys for not buying into the new system by the lack of movement on playing offense and reverting to Gundyball.

No, they will not be proven right.

I was just watching the Top 10 plays of the month on NBA.com:

    http://www.nba.com/video/topten_archive.html

and Rudy Gay is highlighted in several clips... top dunks, plays, clutch shots etc...

I will concede that trading for Battier made sense at the time because JVG was our coach, but there is absolutely no question that Gay will be a star in this league while Battier is just an good role player.
