Garnett wins with Camby next then Battier NEW YORK -- Boston's Kevin Garnett won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year Award on Tuesday for the second straight season. He beat out Denver's Marcus Camby and Houston's Shane Battier. The 6-foot-11 forward led the Celtics with 9.2 rebounds per game. He added 18.8 points, 1.2 blocks and 1.4 steals. Garnett helped the Celtics to league-best records of 66-16 (.805) overall and 31-10 (.738) on the road. Boston held opponents to just 90.3 points (second in the NBA) after allowing 99.2 points per game a season ago. The Celtics had the biggest one-year turnaround in NBA history. Garnett received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes. Camby, who won the award last season, finished second with 178 points and Battier had 175 points. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3358966
good, his defense is garbage in the playoffs. ak47, harpring, brewer all chew him up when he matches up with them. on the other hand, the maligned defender tmac shuts them down.
Just shut up this isn't about the playoffs and your negative posts on every thread about how the playoffs have gone are way past their expiration date. This board seriously needs to do something about idiots like this. I think we should have a 24 hour ban for anyone who continuelly ruins threads by posting a b*tching whining post that was already posted in eight other threads.
Whether or not he deserves to win there was no way he was going to. Most voters look at blocks and steals for how to vote and Battier isn't great at either of those. He just shuts his guy down and makes him take bad shots. He is the Champ Bailey of basketball. Him finishing third ahead of Josh Smith and Chris Paul is a big victory IMO.
I agree but like i've said here and in othe rthreads is a mjority of voters can't see every team. They get to see each team othe rthan the one they have a beat for once or twice a season. Thus they look almost strictly at the stats. Camby gets a lot of blocks but most come on help defense (which is a skill) while his man backs him down a lot. You know this if you watch Denver games just as you know Battier does so much for us defensively if you see Houston games. 80 percent of voters don't though thus people like Camby get over valued. All this said Battier getting third means he'll likely make the all-nba defensive first team .
The same Camby that Pau just dropped 41 on? I agree, though. KG deserved it. Battier should have been second, though.
then why ask those people to vote? see, that is the problem. frankly, those individual awards mean very little. but camby this year ahead of battier? lol.
because the list of meida members who actually cover the NBA nationally aren't very numerous. Plus those guys would have a bias towards the bigmarket teams because they cover them 80 percent of the time. There is no good voting system because the media people who vote either do so with a high degree of bias (believe I know I cover the MAC in college and have witnessed it first hand) or they don't do research. They don't take the vote with the responsibility they should. The only good system for voting that exists is have all starters in the league cast a vote with the rule they can't vote for members of their own team. This will never happen thopugh because the athletes would be too inconvienced to spend an hour voting on the different awards.
you're right wasn't even thinking about it. Of course Camby won it last year I just read what was there and didn't think about it being wrong. ESPN has already fixed it by the way ... its not that his defense is garbage, its that battier gets by on playing hard night after night. in the regular season he doesn't stand out in the playoffs, because everyone's playing hard
