That sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. Get better. As for the surgery, my guess would be the insurance. I don't know their medical system there, but I'm guessing it's socialized. They don't want to pay for him because he's not a citizen, and his own insurance company doesn't have any relationship with the doctors and hospitals there. But, that's a complete guess.
batman you should contact the local US embassy there.......they will definitely be able to assist you in getting back to the states... in addition, since it sounds like you were a victim of crime abroad.....they will be able to help you get reimbursement for your hospital and these related travel costs, as well for suffering.....i believe your state of residence will be responsible for these reimbursements.....but definitely contact the embassy there....they should have someone on call 24hrs...
Wow. Sending positive thoughts your way...have a safe flight back. That just has to suck. Stupid cab driver!
That's my guess too, Juan. Apparently the way things work here, they want me to pay for the bill up front (over 5,000 euros as of this morning) and then have the insurance company reimburse me. Of course, I don't have $7,500 lying around so this will not happen.
pippendagimp: Thanks for the advice. I have already contacted the embassy and I am talking with a lawyer here. I also talked to the police today but they said they couldn't compel the driver to appear before June 22. Apparently the accident is on videotape and they are trying to find it now.
That totally sucks, Batman. I know you were looking forward to this trip. I agree that you should contact the local embassy for help.
Oh geez, not something I wanted to hear. I'm hoping for the best BMJ, I can't imagine it. I'm really hoping it all gets worked out and doesn't end up costing some exorbitant amount of money. And I definitely hope your leg and ankle will be ok! It's good to see you in the thread. Updates are good. Can't wait til you can get back in town.
Wow, talk about a mess compounding itself. Hope you have a safe trip back and that injury gets taken care of ASAP. And hopefully they find that cabby. It pisses me off just hearing about it, and I'm not even involved.
wow. Sorry to hear this... on many levels. Sadly, I almost posted in my rundown of our trip there warning you of the dangers of traffic there. Roads are a bit weird and the trams come screaming through the middle of town around corners from all directions. Not that it would have helped probably... but wow. So sorry to hear that's how it went. Good to hear they got it on cam.
I'm really sorry to here this, man. I hope it all works out. I know that before my wife and I were married and she had her Swedish "insurance" here, she always had to pay out of pocket for her medical expenses and then Sweden would reimburse her. I do think that it is really ****ty that they won't treat you since this was an emergency situation. I guess the Dutch don't play.
Yeah, Jason, I broke my ankle a couple of years ago, so I imagine the pain is pretty excrutiating. Just book the quickest flight back and get better. I'm sure you'll be able to laugh about this in a year.
How insane. I guess your injuries were costly enough that they wouldn't run you a tab, but not serious enough that you were going to die. I'll be reading up on the details of my travel insurance before I head out this summer.
Hope our embassy is able to help you. I can't believe you're giving yourself shots in the STOMACH! I cringe just thinkin about that. Hope you get well soon.
