Bruce had to keep up his "billionaire playboy" image, hence the women. The whole thing with him saying "she was gonna wait for me Alfred" pretty much says it wasn't about her look to Bruce. It was more of a childhood friend/crush thing that he still has going from his childhood. That's all I have since I barely skimmed through the past few posts.
Why would I have to hang around supermodels to find an unattractive person unattractive? Like the poster above me just said, I don't understand this notion that an opinion of objectivity is always reflected as indicative of that person's lifestyle. I can still have good judgment and a pair of working eyes without living at the playboy mansion, as some of you would have it. And what's up with the false dichotomy. There's a pretty giant gap between Maggie Gyllenhaal and 'supermodel.' Any cute, attractive woman would do for that role. I'm not here to make some kind of social critique on the values of our society. That's just silly. It's the entertainment industry. So I don't think it's "unfortunate," that's the nature of the business. She doesn't fit. Just like Jason Alexander wouldn't have fit the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Again, why the false dichotomy? And what's with the assumption that only unattractive women can be intelligent and of high character? So the attractive ones have to be idiots? And don't you think the fact that Bruce Wayne is probably the biggest playboy in Gotham, would kind of call for his love interest to at the least be a 6 on the 10 scale? That's just me though.
Well yea, obviously. How many people actually fall in love with someone with their appearance as the sole and only cause? That wasn't what I was implying. My point was that the character wasn't realistic. You could just as easily find an attractive actress and portray her as intelligent and sophisticated and all the other good virtues.
First of all, all of those hot women are a smoke screen. He's not really dating them, it's an act to keep up the rich playboy front. 2nd, where is this 50/50 discussion about Maggie going on?
There was a thread basically asking if people would do her, and it had a poll associated with it. I'm not sure where it ended up, but last I saw it was like a 55/45 split in favor. Again, very low for a leading lady in the summer's biggest movie. I'm sure it was also skewed because this BBS is full of computer geeks that would have sex with a broom stick if it had a hole in it.
Well this movie is trying to be more than the usual superficial summer flick. I can't think of any major reviewers that had anything negative to say about her acting either. I guess you are the reason why someone like Denise Richards is cast as a nuclear scientist in a Bond movie. Agree to disagree I guess, but this movie is hugely succesful critically and commercially and the guy responsible for that casted her, so he must know what he's doing.
No credible film critic is going to risk their credibility by making a misogynistic, politically incorrect statement pertaining to her appearance. But almost every person I've talked to since the film came out has brought up her lack of ummm...attractiveness, on their own. As far as Denise Richards, why do you guys create this false dichotomy? That it either has to be a homely genius embodying all great virtues or some supermodel bimbo. There's plenty of decently attractive actresses that can be articulate and reasonably intelligent.
Fine. You and apparently many others think she's ugly. That's your opinion. But I took exception when some assert her unattractiveness as undeniable fact (e.g. Nolan would have to be blind to think otherwise). If she was as ugly as some make her out to be, she would not have made it as an actress. She would not have her picture on magazine covers. But there's no point debating her attractiveness. It's a matter of personal taste. The girl he was with didn't come off as a ditz. Beyond that, we know nothing about her. But that's already enough to establish her as someone more worthy of Bruce Wayne's love than a girl he's cared for his entire life who happens to look like Maggie Gyllenhaal? I don't agree. You find it believable that Bruce Wayne would fly around Gotham dressed like a bat, but you don't find it believable that he could be in love with someone who looks like Maggie Gyllenhaal. Great.
Poor argument. We're talking about believability within the spectrum of the Batman realm. He's a billionaire playboy. You're essentially widening the scope to reality, in which if applied the entire concept of any of the characters seems like a joke and crumbles. Doesn't work.
False dichotomy? Relative to the general population, for her age group (25-35), she is not ugly. Moving on, because debating the attractiveness of a woman is boring as hell. Oh, I wasn't critiquing the entertainment industry. It was more a critique of the consumers. No, it's not just like that. Bruce Wayne has to be physically fit to do what he does. There is no reason for Rachel to be hot other then that fits the comic book archetype you're used to. No. But from what I know of Bruce Wayne's character, physical beauty would not be a precondition for him to love someone, while intelligence and character would be. Same goes for Harvey Dent. In case you didn't catch it, that playboy stuff is an act. He isn't actually a vain, superficial jerk. He just pretends to be one.
Did anyone else feel like they changed the entire personality of Rachel from Batman begins? Maybe its because of a change in actresses but the Rachel in the Dark Knight was a long stronger psychologically then the first one. Any word on if Heath Lecture will get serious considerations for a Oscar?
Rachel in the first movie annoyed me a lot but the new Rachel didn't annoy me at all she was actually very cool. Too bad the looks weren't the same.
So lets say Batman gets to $550mil Are any die hard Batman fans going to go watch it again? to push it over Titanic! SINK THE TITANIC!!!
Why do people dismiss unconventional beauty so fast? I think she is mega gorgeous and mega sexy, even as much as I think Scarlett Johansson is sexy and Jessica Alba is sexy, she is just a different human being in a different body with more of a heart shaped face and defined lips. She's not your typical Hollywood face, but that in itself makes her breathtaking imo. I know some people will say "unconventional" is just a euphemism for "ugly." I guess it's just different opinions of who is beautiful. Agree to disagree...whatev.
Well you would be wrong because there aren't tons of people walking out of the theater saying "great movie, except for Maggie G." Just found this today, one of my only critiques with both movies is how much destruction of public and private property he engages in: <object width="464" height="388" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"><param name="movie" value="http://www2.funnyordie.com/public/flash/fodplayer.swf" /><param name="flashvars" value="key=4d6d5673d4" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="464" height="388" flashvars="key=4d6d5673d4" allowfullscreen="true" quality="high" src="http://www2.funnyordie.com/public/flash/fodplayer.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object><noscript>See <a href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/4d6d5673d4">EXCLUSIVE Dark Knight Deleted Scene</a> and more <a href="http://www.funnyordie.com">funny videos</a> on <a href="http://www.funnyordie.com">FunnyOrDie.com</a></noscript><div style="text-align:center;width:464px;">See more <a href="http://www.funnyordie.com">funny videos</a> at Funny or Die</div>
