Agreed - they made batman seem a little too ordinary. A lot of his power is derived from his stealth and ability of surprise. This film had him slugging it out through throngs of bad guys a little too much, IMO.
Yea, exactly, I abhorred that. I don't know why more critics haven't said anything about this, because I was absolutely shocked when I saw it in the movie. I thought it was general consensus that one of the strong points of Batman Begins was that you didn't see him fighting. Remember the warehouse scenes where the thugs are literally sh-tting their pants as they disappear one by one and have no idea what is going on? THAT was the terrifying Batman they needed to be building on. In this, he just came off as so ordinary.
I WANT to agree with that, but I disliked all of the fighting in BB besides the first scene at the docks. When he was fighting in the Arkham basement, or when he was fighting Ra's thugs I was rather annoyed at the super tight shots and camera shaking. Have Batman come out of nowhere, great, that's what he does. But I want to see what he's doing. I'm not looking at it from the perspective of the thugs, I'm a movie viewer, I want to see the action. The problem with that is that Bale doesn't have enough martial arts training, and even if he did, it probably wouldn't go well in that suit. But that's just something he needs to work around. Bruce Wayne has mastered all forms of hand to hand combat, it's a shame if we don't see it in action.
Great movie, will be one of my favorites of all-time. Two scenes I will always remember will be the Joker outside the Hospital as it is blowing up, and the shot of him hanging out the window of a cop car. Just beautiful. I think Heath deserves an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this performance.
The intimidation and the fighting are two different things. Yes, a lot of folks loved the warehouse type scene where Batman creates that 'fear'. It seems there were a LOT of complaints about 'shaky-cam' in BB, though.
Only complaint I had was that the Joker had everything go his way, he had a plan for everything, was a little over the top for me...other than that it was a really good movie. Though not the best movie of all time....
It's been a while, I guess all I remember is the docks scene and figured they used that the whole movie. They really need to do something about the fight scenes. Why not a stunt double? Is Bale just totally against that?
yea, i'm not too impressed with the fight scenes either. Keaton's Batman showed his martial arts skills so much better. see 3:50 mark <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z7Kg9xmOzEU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z7Kg9xmOzEU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> would definietly liked to see more of that in dark knight
How was he ordinary? Except for the Joker fight scene, he was taking out multiple guys at the same time. This isn't Metal Gear Solid, Batman isn't going to hide under a box and wait for 5 minutes until the bad guys are alone. And besides that, how did he not surprise people? Nobody seems him in the bright as day lit parking garage until he bends that guys gun. He busts through a window in the sky scraper and after taking out a guy or two, he vanishes and shows up behind the other guys. That's all kinds of surprise and stealth right there. In the unfinished building, it's a race against time, he's got to take down everybody to keep anybody from getting hurt. My only gripe and it goes back to the first movie is that he never makes use of the "explosive powders" like a flash bang or something and he doesn't use any gas to provide smokescreens.
I was one of the few laughing when the Joker was waddling out of the hospital in that nurse outfit...I LOVED that scene, it was frikkin hilarious. Heath's Joker was a lot more funny than people give him credit it for. Also I cracked up when the joker was washing his hands with the hand sanitizer.
It's not a dance as he was tought in the first movie. They use a relatively new fighting technique known as Keysi Fighting Method or KFM. It aint pretty: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zVWyqBdE5RI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zVWyqBdE5RI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> It all goes into the realism they strive for in these movies and in real life, fights aren't all beatifully choreographed. A guy with 2 swords isn't going to stand there and show off.
Just saw "The Dark Night" last night. This is going to sound funny, but I don't think it was long enough. I'm not just being a hyperventilating fanboy, but I really think they didn't develop a few plot lines well enough. The Harvey Dent character didn't add up, nor did the police corruption stuff. A Joker speech at the end when he was commenting on how he and Batman were two sides of the same coin was nice, but the film didn't really explore that idea enough. Also, the convict ship would have been blown out of the water in three seconds. I mean, really. Nolan has more faith in people than I do. On the positive side, Heath Ledger was awesome. My wife said that he reminded her of Jack Lemmon in "Some Like It Hot" when he came out of the exploding hospital. I think she was on to something. The caper at the beginning of the movie was superb and I thought Batman's Hong Kong adventure was exciting.
Just broke a new record "Dark Knight" overshadows box office rivals again Batman buried his rivals at the North American box office for a second weekend on Sunday, racing past $300 million in a record 10 days. The Caped Crusader's blockbuster outing, "The Dark Knight," sold an estimated $75.6 million worth of tickets during the three days beginning Friday, taking its total to $314.2 million, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said. A week after it scored a record-breaking $158 million opening, "The Dark Knight" added a new title to its impressive list of superlatives: the best second weekend, surpassing the holiday-boosted $72 million haul of 2004's "Shrek 2." http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20080727/121719073700.html
Any chance this film can break the "Titanic" record of $601 million? It has gained over $300 million in 10 days and would only need to double that over the rest of its run.
I saw it. It was good I'm strange but I would put this to be as good as the the 1st one with Keaton [which I really liked ] they are different . . .and GOOD in different ways Ledger did a Good Joker .. . . [I was disappointed about some of the usual joker fair . . .he more a painted psycho than the Joker] [where were the 'jokes' beyond his Magic Trick] nothing could live up to the hype but this made a decent effort at it Rocket River maybe i'm just old school
I hope it does...it deserves it. I have zero clue how the hell Titanic achieved a domestic gross of 601 million.
For this Joker, I think all the scenarios he presented to his victims / Gotham were his "jokes". Getting Batman to choose between saving Dent and Rachel (and, of course, switching the addresses) was a joke to him. There's the hospital "gag" (either Reese dies or a hospital gets blown up). And then, finally, there's the joke with the two ships where the occupants of each can determine the fate of the other. I'm sure he found all of it hilarious, which is what made this particular Joker so twisted.
I just saw it tonight and, ya know, I agree with you. It's 2 1/2 hours long and there's SO MUCH story in it that, at the end, it felt rushed. But I tell ya, I don't have many complaints. It really was a fantastic movie. First time in a long time that I felt that I got my money's worth (or more). Just an amazingly good movie!
Watched it, halfway into the movie I needed to tinkle bad but didn't want to miss any of the movie, that really sucked. Last time I drink coke during movie. Fight scenes could have been better, Batman Begins was better at that. I wasn't a big fan of the Michael Keaton Batman version. You must not understand women...but who does...
