Freakin' excellent movie!! I saw this last night and was blown away!! Christian Bale was an excellent Batman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine were just great in it as well!! I am going to see this again, soon!! If you like Batman, even just a little bit, GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!
I saw it the other day.... I'll have to say I'm in the minority here. I thought the movie was good, but not super duper great as many people on this board are claiming. I think the reason many people are so crazy over this is b/c it is Batman. I think Mr & Ms Smith was more clever and a better film, trying to be as objective as possible.
Just out of curiosity, how do you think that the movie was clever? I thought Mr. and Mrs. Smith was awful, really did. Batman was excellent, imo. Of course, it had the whole scope of Batman to work with as you mentioned. However, I actually think that's something that works against you when making a movie (not in terms of revenue and general formula). The film makers need to marry their vision with the purist idea of such a franchise. Think that can be quite difficult. Lucas even ruined a franchise he created himself with the first couple of prequel films!
The only thing "clever" about Mr. and Mrs. Smith is getting Angelina Jolie to look that hot in whatever she was wearing. As far as the plot was concerned, everything could be seen coming from miles away and none of the "action" sequences could ever hold a candle to anything in Batman. I'm being objective as well... plot-wise, action sequence wise, and acting wise... Batman wins... and you normally can't say all of that about a "super-hero" movie.
I still want to see The Smiths movie but it tells me alot that no one has bothered to open up another thread about that movie itself. Probably the reason so many people think this Batman is great is because the past Batmans has disappointed them.
That's not true. That's the worst time to go. That is the time when housewives take their baby or young children to the movies.
**************SPOILERS************* After reading all the reviews from people and critics, I was pretty excited to see the movie. After watching it, I have to say this movie is MEDIOCRE at best. It was so contrived that I just couldn't get into the whole Batman mode. There were so many parts that don't make sense. Sure, it's based on a comic book but it should still follow some logic... Here's some stuff that don't make sense: 1 - When he was in a prison in some asian country, how did he get so good at fighting? Didn't he train AFTER he left prison? 2 - The microwave machine heats up water. We have water molecules in our blood. Batman and the evil boss fought RIGHT BESIDE the microwave emitter! Their blood should have been vaporized. They should have been dead. 3 - Why did his company have all those gadgets laying around again? Every company would do a cost analysis and figure out products like ultra-armor and a tank/car cost A LOT of money. Yet in the movie, they supposedly stopped production because they didn't want to spend money to equip soldiers. 4 - When he turned off his lights, why couldn't anyone see his car during the chase? 5 - How did the black guy 'develop' an antidote so quickly? His blood has so many compounds. I doubt he can isolate it within a month, let alone a day. 6 - How come no one followed him to his hideout? Did the cops just give up? And so many parts were so CORNY: 1 - In the prison, the guard was taking him away and batman says, "i don't need protection." Then the guard says, "no, protection for them." That's so stupid. 2 - Batman meets the evil guy in prison for 5 minutes. He leaves prison and sees the flower, and thinks to himself, "hey, some weird stranger told me to climb a huge mountain. I have no idea who the heck he is and I'm very tired but hey, I should do it anyways." Wtf. 3 - Batman goes into the hotel to eat at a fancy restaurant with those 2 girls. They go for a swim. Then when the manager tells him to get out, he just stuffs a check into the guy's pocket and says he's buying the place. WTF. I think the owner needs to be informed first. It doesn't matter how much money you have, if the owner doesn't want to sell it you can't buy it. That's just stupid. 4 - When Batman is about to leave Katie Holmes, he repeats that stupid line she said at the hotel. There is so much more. I could have handled the corny stuff if the plot-holes weren't there. But because they are there, this movie is pretty so-so. I know some of you might say this movie doesn't have to make sense since it's from a comic book. But imagine if Batman started flying and shooting fireballs from his hands. Doesn't make much sense right? That's how I feel about the movie. It kills the story.
Oh yea, this was also very, very corny: 5 - How the father leaves his multi-trillion dollar company in the hands of other people so he can SAVE LIVES as a doctor... . OMG, Maybe they should have made him Christ-reborn. That way we will know for sure that he's a really really really really GREAT GUY. **************END SPOILER***************
Wow. You'd think a guy with the name 'MartianMan' would have seen a fantasy, comic book or sci-fi movie before. Seriously...don't see one of these types of movies anymore. Ever.
************SPOILER*********** ALSO, (sorry, must get out of my system) when katie holmes was riding in batman's car (and she got hit by the nerve gas), why wasn't she afraid of Batman? The scarecrow was hit with the gas and batman turned into a monster, yet when katie was hit with the gas, she wasn't afraid at all... ************END****************
Please, fantasy and sci-fi can make sense. If a movie says, "hey, in this world people can fly." Then I'm cool with everyone flying. It makes sense. But when a movie says, "hey in this movie, this powder causes you to view everyone as monsters." Then I expect Katie holmes to view Batman as a monster. Or if the movie says, "hey, this microwave emitter vaporizes water." I expect the dang emitter to vaporize water dammit.
i saw them two days apart and i thought batman was easily better, and i have no built in batman allegiance. i thought i would really like mr. and mrs. smith b/c i thought it would be a lot more quick, witty back and forth dialogue but except for vince vaughn no one really did much clever back and forth (and his back and forth was mostly with himself). i still found it somewhat funny, the action was good, it was somewhat enjoyable, and angelina jolie was hotter than i ever thought she was, but batman still easily beat it. batman was very good.
overall, i liked the movie, but i thought some parts werent needed . i didnt care for the batmobile jumping buildings - for me, the movie would have been better without it. and they didnt need all that cheesy dialogue by the cops when they were chasing the batmobile.
When he first shows up at the monestary and Ducard starts kicking his ass, you hear him name all the different techniques Bruce is using. From that you infer that he has had previous training. At least, most people did. You are right. But it is supposed to be focused microwaves, so it's aimed down at the street instead of the two of them. Of course there were plenty of people under the rail line who would have been hit. Uh, it was only the body armor that was too costly for the military. Even then, it was a prototype, it's not like they made tons of those things and couldn't sell them, it was one PROTOTYPE. Hell, the military orders things they don't end up using all the time. Haven't you heard of the Comanche? The Tumbler was supposed to be a "bridging vehicle" but the bridge didn't work. Silly, but still, it's an explanation and if you listened to the dialogue, you'd have known that. It was a dark stretch of road, I just drove back from dallas last night and when I-45 is just two lanes, all I can see are headligts. You are right, it would be impossible, but it is a movie. He lost them. I imagine that the prison doesn't want to deal with having 6 guysgoing to their infirmary every day.[/quote] He went on a quest around the world to learn about crime and how to fight and had become lost. A guy who knows who he is and promises to help him find what he's looking for has him released from prison. He didn't "get" out, Ducard obviously had some kind of pull to have him released and he had already heard of the League Of Shadows since he called them vigilantes when Ducard first said the name of his group in that cell. But, I guess you have trecked around the world and have been in a Bhutanese prison, so you prohbably have experience of how to handle that situation. He said he's BUYING it. That doesn't mean a transaction had occured. Stuffing the check in the guys coat, he wasn't a waiter but a manager, was just for show. Part of the playboy act he's putting on. It worked better in the script, he tells the guy who runs his company to broker a deal, instead of the check in the coat thing. But basically, his mind is set on buying it and he has the resources to get it done. Yes, that was stupid, but Spider-Man already used the "you know who I am" line. That's not really a fair analogy.
Thomas Wayne has been a Doctor in the comics for a long time. How can a Doctor be a billionaire? So it makes sense that he owns a huge company but doesn't handle the day to day running of it. It was obviously an inherited empire for him as well.
Hee. Oski had the patience to go down the line and actually address all the points. I was just trying to get by with a smart-ass comment. I will add this though: Holmes was already past the 'seeing her fears' thing (which, as Oski pointed out, explains the whole bat-monster angle anyway) and into the 'drugged to oblivion and fading fast' level. Hence the rush to get her an antidote. Most of this was pretty easy to catch...
Sorry for bringing up a 1 month old thread, but after finally getting around to watching this movie, I absolutely had to chime in. In one word: Wow. This movie was absolutely amazing. Now that is the image that a person should get when they think of Batman. A terrifying menace, not the cheesy Batman of old making constant one liners. A couple of things I didn't like though: 1. Katie Holmes' character seemed useless, as was stated in the thread. 2. During the car chase, I didn't like the corny one liners by the cops. "What does it look like?....Nevermind" Ugh. What made the movie so great was that Batman didn't engage in this garbage unlike the past films. What I loved: 1. A lot of you pointed out that you didn't like the dizzying fight scenes, but that is probably the one thing I loved most about this film. It captured the true mystique of the Batman. You see him from the perspective of the bad guys - they are absolutely terrified and have no idea what is going on. I love how it just showed them one by one going down but you couldn't see him. In the past films the screenwork was further away and it was just like any other streetfight - a bunch of dudes fighting some giant bat. It didn't capture the aura of Batman and how he utilizes invisibility (so to speak) to his advantage. 2. The hallucination scenes were intense. When Krane first puts on the mask ("I have a little mask I like to show my patients") and drugs the crime boss, I literally jumped back. Krane was even more menacing with his normal face. 3. Alot expressed discontent that the Scarecrow wasn't elaborated upon, but this was another thing I appreciated. The movie is about developing Batman, not the other characters. They put in just enough of Krane to leave you with a little taste of his menacing presence. Any more would have ruined it. 4. Loved the ending. "He left his calling card" I absolutely cannot wait until the next one.
