You should certainly change your stance once you absorb new information. I suspect the reason you get call out has more to do with your refusal to acknowledge erroneous judgment. If you weren't so quick to point fingers and dishing out names to others who don't see things your way, you probably won't receive the same volume of condensing responses later on. It is similar to one of the biggest problem that plague the current administration, that is nobody wants to take any responsibility for past decisions.

It is hard to take the route of forgiveness, when forgetfulness and ignorance might still trumpet the truth. This line applies to both of your definition of conservatives and liberals.

Please do keep your open mind.

So somebody with whom you disagree is a problem?

Other than his rants about American "traitors" neither T_J or Basso expresses the kind of disrespect they are shown.

I would imagine that they are a bit of a caricature of their true positions. I know I am sometime just to move the discussion along. See the discussion is the whole thing HERE. This is a board not a voting booth or a legislative caucus.

It doesn't really matter what anyone's position is as long as the discussion moves along in interesting ways.. and usually the interesting places are the outer boundaries of issues.

Concur....recommend amending the underlined to moderates and conservatives. Also, most discussions are damaged by posters who want to major on the minors (example: see next post).

Actually, I don't point fingers or call people out until recently when I've grown sick of trying to take a higher ground which doesn't work here.

Generally speaking, the people who spew the condescending remarks are a handful of left-wing nutz who are pretty incorrent in their posts and tend to use strawman's and personal attacks vs. debating. It's disgusting.

I consider all sides and am very open...my mind changes as i gain new information, and i'm willing to take pause. but for those who are more interested in making someone look bad than having a mature discussion - they can't handle it, so they attack attack and make it into some sort of personal battle. i don't have time for such people.

Such an ironic sentence.. Condescending and inaccurate while condemning condescention and inaccuracy. Well done!

Quack-science. You took one article and made a complete, final conclusion without knowing even a fraction of the facts or history involved. Very open-minded.

No it doesn't. You repeatedly accused the "quack science" guy of claims he didn't make. You were told that repeatedly of your inaccuracy and continued to make the wild accusations and then railed against them. Interestingly, you set up the very same strawman argument that you accuse others of.

The M.O. of the conservative dialogue has been based on talk radio/TV for so long that it is ingrained in the worldview. When you can talk about positions that can't be analyzed in a 2 minute conversation or throw out facts that can't be refuted in real-time, you tend to "win" a bunch of arguments. On BBS's and blogs it's not so easy because the other side does have the tools and the time to challenge the assumptions and correct the facts and present counters that are grounded in thought and facts.

Conservatives have spent the last quarter-century beefing up their delivery of arguments instead of the rationale underpinning those arguments. Now, slowly but surely, they are losing. As they come to recognize this, they become more of a caricature because all they can do is mimic what had previously been successful. On boards and blogs, it doesn't matter how loud you shout or how often you repeat something... if it's a bad idea based on bogus facts, it will become apparent to all but the advocates. Because they can't easily formulate new arguments consistent with facts and their philosophy, their philosophy becomes intertwined with the old arguments themselves, as well as the way they are delivered. What's really sad is that they are now trying to control the facts in a way that supports their faulty philosophy instead of changing to fit the facts. Reality's a b****.

When you challenge a conservative for the first time, they start to freak out after a few minutes because the argument is not going as it would on Rush or Sean. In the real world, nobody can cut your mike or twist your words without your tacit approval. In the real world, not all Liberals or opponents to the administration are twits. In the real world, there are soldiers and firefighters and farmers who don't agree with you. In the real world, you're not Rush or Sean. In the real world, there's nuance.

Reality must intrude at some point and this administration has taken actions that created a reality that took Conservatives from cruise control to a death spiral. They would have gotten there eventually, but Bush accelerated the arrival. They can theoretically break out of it, but Lincoln ain't walking through that door anytime soon. In the meantime, look for more shouting, more repeating, and more extreme rhetoric because that's all they know.

(Note: There are thoughtful conservatives out there. This post is not aimed at you, but at the blindingly loyal supporters of this administration who call themselves conservative and the authoritarians who have taken over the Republican Party.)

It is difficult for me to believe that you are ascribing these actions to the "left-wing nutz" and ignore the same actions by others.

In conclusion, the moderates on the board are the best.

i put his quote in there and you didn't have a response. You don't need a degree in physics to know the guy was full of it, and by the way, I happen to have a degree in physics.

    NewYorker,

My best advise is to simply quit posting here. Anything and everything you say will be used against you and twisted around. Its simplistic gang-like tactics; if you're not for us, you're against us. There is no middle ground. You will not get a civil debate here. Posters are not here to listen, only to divide and conquer, which sadly is the byproduct of todays media.

probably because they are the ones that spew hate and start with the 5-year old name calling. So naturally they stick out more. I think the conservatives here carry themselves better here.

The irony is that I'm actually a moderate that leans slightly to the left, but when you have such extremist people on the left, it makes you feel pushed into the right.

The happens as well when you are surrounded by right wing nutz, they push you to the left. Really, moderates are the ones who have to really think through their positions and not just buy into the left or right's dogmatic positioning.

i've done that but you know, there are a few people here that I can actually say I've learned something from. And in a way, i've learned a lot of stuff from people here who have posted lots of perspectives and brought about new information to me that i wouldn't have known.

So it's not all bad, but a few do make it nearly unbearable at times.
