What are the combos when they're on and off the court? That is, who are the other 3/4 players around them?

You can see the team units here...

    http://basketballvalue.com/teamunits.php?year=2010-2011&team=HOU

you would have to do a comparison of all the combinations to see who they are playing with on the court when they are at their best or struggle.

Edit: Awww I was a second too slow ;)

    Nice analysis Durvasa.

Could you do the same thing with brooks and martin from last year?

Just curious to see if their defensive issues appeared last year too.

Small sample size and against real tough competition.

Interesting, but not very useful in that it is just too short a sampling.

If it was over like 20 games or so, where we have some games against great teams, some mediocre and some crap teams I think it would be more telling.

Sure, I can look into that for you.

DD, regarding sample size and the competition we've faced, those are fair points. For Brooks and Martin, the early returns this year appears to be consistent with the general trend, unfortunately, if you look at multi-year, adjusted +/-.

I would love that lineup. Prehaps a trade of Martin and Taylor for Iggy?

It reall limits what a coach can do when guys cant play together for fear of getting really exposed. Cant play chase and martin together and cant play battier and lee together.

With Brooks at the PG, I'd rather have Lee and Battier next to him. You're right that Lee is an average offensive talent, but he's also a balanced offensive player. He can handle the ball, run the floor, spot-up, and make good basket cuts. It would put a little more responsibility on Brooks to take charge of the offense, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

Interesting, but again, it depends upon whom they are playing with.....etc...what about Yao.....how does that effect them?

Does his time on the court give them a better defensive squad?

Think you're still being short-sighted on the subject. Prior to the current season, Yao has never played with Martin, Budinger, C. Lee or Brad Miller. And at 24 minutes/game, that could take awhile. Beyond that, Yao's D looks more like Mark Eaton these days. Hopefully, that's just conditioning.

And Martin's 155 last season minutes as a Rocket don't qualify as much of anything. As far as system familiarity. the D rotations of the Adelman Kings are nothing like the VG holdover schemes the Rockets use.

Bottomline, this is a strong belief if had since Yao was drafted. Players with decent shooting skills combined with above average physical skills are what the Rockets should have ephasized in acquiring. Bud and C. Lee fit that mold. My humble opinion is they need more time.

Not that it matters, but being 2nd only to the Lakers in PPG is pretty impressive. That getS more impressive when a little D turns into a lot of transition O. My favorite part of the game.

GATER, you're consistent and I appreciate that. From as far back as I remember, you always stressed that the system makes a defense more so than individual defensive talent. Part of my optimism heading into this season was that I bought into that. But in the back of my mind, and I expressed this concern last year, was that defense could be an issue with all the subpar individual defenders in our core rotation. Those reservations have come to the forefront with our recent struggles. It could be short-sightedness, though. 5 games isn't a lot, and we've played some pretty good teams. We've been competitive in all of them.

I think, for my own mental health, I'll heed your advice and give this team more time. Putting down the pitchfork ... :)

If you are not too busy, can you whip up the numbers of units that utilize a big that can rotate rather than Scola/Yao.

I firmly believe we can improve tremendously by starting Hayes over Scola or Hill over Yao.
