ok, i'm gonna be there at 6:30 pm regardless of who shows up. i'll wait in the lobby til 7. after that i'll be trying to get into a pick up game. if we get 5 people by then, then we'll get a "next" on the court somewhere if courts are taken. my number is 832-298-3054 if you need it. EDIT: almost forgot, its' gonna be at UH central campus in the new rec center just in case no one's unsure. also, i think the parking cops will be on alert til 8. so you might have to go to metered parking. i don't know if times are different for summer. or you can go get a visitor's parking pass at the visitor's booth for $2. so you're probably looking at a total of $10 to play on monday if we start at 6:30. maybe we can find another location by next week, b/c i think this could get expensive. if you guys prefer to start at 8, that's fine with me. but for now, i'm making it at 6:30.
Yeah no luck on those venues guys. Let's just set it for UH at 7pm. Give some time for those getting off work at 6 to get there. I don't even think you need a UH student to sponsor you. Community pass is 8 bucks.
So, it's $8 + $2 parking now? I'm sorry, I LOVE to play and REALLY want to go, but this is getting ridiculous on paying to PRACTICE somewhere. I'm lucky enough to have the money to be able to spend that weekly, but I know there are some that are not that fortunate. And, this is all on top of paying almost $60 to even play in the league.
i agree mogrod. the only way to reduce to $8 at the most is to meet up at 8pm. just don't leave your car UNTIL it is 8. they will give you a ticket with 5 mins. to go. i'm all for an outdoor court.
lol... after the first practice, hfn. i was peeling off skin for a week. i'll be there again. and mogrod, since we'll be spending some time in the paint... this time we'll hack like they hack.
No kidding! If they want to hack, I'm going to start laying them out when they come in the paint. Nothing that would cause injury but I'm not putting up with that B.S. again! What REALLY pissed me off was the way they acted if we even touched them on the other end. What all are we exactly doing at this practice other than playing? I assumed this was mandatory to all those who were on a team so we can iron out all the issues (ie: how to split up the teams fairly, see what complete talent we have, etc). But, by the response in this thread, it doesn't seem we will have a real good turn out. Are we going to come up with team names, uniforms, etc? It seems we are getting to a point that we really need to get everything ironed out so we know exactly what is going on, who is on our respective team, etc. And about the money, I hate to complain especially when Biggie has gone out of his way to organize everything and UH has some DAMN nice courts, but even $8 per time we want to practice is going to add up and is a bit much just for practicing. Like I said, Biggie has put a good effort into trying to find a place, but someone has to know of a decent court in a good spot we can all get to and can play for free. I can't imagine everyone is thrilled or can put up the $8+ over and over again to practice.
i'm not thrilled about paying money for practice either. no one knows of a covered place that doesn't get too busy? the one near my place usually has a good number of people and plus, on one end of the court some punks thought it would be cool to dig holes in the cemented court. makes it very prone to injury.
kind of have to agree with mogrod...i'd love to make it out for every practice, but having to make the 45 min drive + however much it costs just to play at UH on top of league fees is kinda over the top. i'm still down for league play....just can't afford the $10 practices
i know the ten buck fees can add up quicker than a muth, but we can help out biggie with finding another court. i'm sure it's not easy trying to get all this set up along with his day by day stuff. we gotz ya back, big. meeting before or after the practice about splitting up teams, court, etc... notorious?
biggie is on the verge of setting up a new location. as for meeting up before or after, i go with before. that way we can set teams up immediately and work out the kinks in chemistry during practice.
Well, depending on how many of you guys want to risk getting kicked out of places, one place I do have a bit of success with is the indoor courts at Rice. They don't check you at the door and they rarely do ID checks. They have several courts there as well. Just that they are kind of scattered through the gymnasium. I haven't been since last summer but I played there quite a bit and never got caught. A lot can happen in a year though but since it's summer I highly doubt there will be that much trouble. There is free parking but it's a bit far from the gym. It's a good walk but I'm sure you guys are up for it. The gym is number 52 on this map http://www.rice.edu/maps/buildings.html This is probably the best gate to enter to get there and it's close to the parking lot. I know this is tough to make and all but that's why it takes quite a bit of dedication to do something like this. I'm doing my best to find a venue for us to play at but indoor gyms don't come cheap. Also there is the covered courts over at San Felipe and Yorktown. Of course there is some competition out there but if you guys want we can test our skills against them. I'm all up for that. I definitely want to still have this meeting though whether or not we're playing. we MUST get our teams locked in. Some things like this seem to only be resolvable face to face. OK, just to verify, we're going to Rice now? Shouldn't we just keep it at UH for now since it's such short notice for tomorrow? We can change for later practices and that could be one of the things we talk about before or after. It's just a thought. Maybe we can all post what their preference is and we can get a good feel as to where we should go. This is just for tomorrow as we can all put our heads together and find somewhere for later dates. Either is fine, I just worry that those that don't check the board as reguraly are still thinking it's at UH.
sorry for the late confirmation I'll be there along with my friend again, uh or rice. so count 2 more players in. edit: definitely agree about the fees though, paying $8 each time down is getting a bit out of hand just for a practice although until we can find a less costly solution or a free solution, will continue to pay it.
mogrod, i agree with the short notice. the reason we decided to change it to rice was b/c it seemed every other person was dropping out b/c of the fee. we can't have much of a practice if half the squad doesn't show up. now if half the squad doesn't show up b/c they didn't read teh board on time for the change, then i guess we're right back where we started. biggie and i felt there was too many "complaints (totally legit excuse)" about the fee and don't want to discourage people. since he's already posted the new info, i think changing it back to UH will further confuse people.
I vote for Rice too. We can use UH as a fallback until we find a new place. It won't hurt to test out Rice Gymnasium. Just need everyone to be on time. I have some of your phone numbers as well. If you guys could email me your phone numbers. I have yaowink's, omega's, and van's. Last time I had a slew of numbers but I can't figure out which numbers belong to whom.
