A more informative statistic would probably be HRs/AB. 2003 and 2004 look fairly "normal" compared to the other years but didn't he miss quite a few games those seasons?
The reason he hit less HR's is because pitchers stopped pitching to him. Bonds had 232 walks in 2004 compared to 126 in 93.
OMG, thegary, that is easily the funniest pic ever posted on this board. That's the first time I have truely LOL while reading this board...
it's hard to say how many total homeruns bonds has gained from steroids, b/c while they obviously increased his hr/ab, he has been walked so much that he has lost a ton of ABs to hit homers. looking at his homer totals over his career, he has a mid-30s to low-40's guy already, and, except for the 73 year, he's hit 45 or 46 homers. so by that measure he may have only gained at most 10 homers per year for 4 years so about 40. as far as the 73, 2001 was a 1987-like homer explosion year where you had bonds with 73, sosa with 64, luis freakin' gonzalez with 57, and a ton of guys with 40+. so the 73 would seem to have quite a bit to do with possible the baseballs being extra juiced that year (or something, b/c the totals haven't been matched before or since). so even then he may have only gained 10-15 extra homers. and you can't really argue he was due to fall off with age (maybe he was with the eyesight mention, maybe he wasn't) b/c hank aaron had three 40+ homer seasons after the age of 35. in fact, his career high (47) came at the age of 37 in only 139 games, and he hit 40 homers in only 120 games (a 54 homer pace) at the age of 39.
