Barkley: Energy and toughness underrated [Rockets related]

Yep.

The 1996 Rockets needed Horry to be something more than just a decent defender and a spot-up 3 point shooter. He failed at developing a post-up game that Rudy tried to implement. He was never a great passer, other than making the entry pass in the post (which back then, most of the guys could do... nowadays, its like pulling teeth). The "clutchness" factor only came through on teams that were guaranteed to go deep in the playoffs regardless of his absence in the regular season.

People counted on Horry to blossom into a star after the 1995 run... instead that ended up being the "peak" of his abilities as a starter in the league. He found his role on the championship Lakers/Spurs teams, but that role was never considered as a option on the Rockets or Suns (who both expected him to turn into a Pippen-like starting SF).

 

Energy and toughness was exactly what Calvin Murphy was ranting about at halftime, for all who watched the CSN broadcast.

 

Horry filled his role to a T on those lakes and Spurs teams. He deserves credit for that. But when some (too many IMO) say, 'The rings = HOF", well, sorry, Bob.
