Mihm would be the pefect backup for Yao. He hustles and he can actually play a little bit of offense so that we wouldnt have to completely change our offense when Yao's sucking air. Getting Mihm would free us up to trade Cato for a decent starting 4. I wouldn't mind seeing us trade with Boston, they re-sign Mihm and we trade them Cato for Mihm and Atkins to backup Steve. We get two good backups and they get a top frontcourt in the east with Cato and LaFrentz. With the TE, I say we look to deal with anybody that wants in on the Kobe sweepstakes. LAC might send us Wilcox and Richardson IF the freed up money could land them Kobe. Considering Maggette is Kobe's best friend and Kobe is already set up in LA, the Clips seem like the perfect match. The Clips would shell out the cash for LA's favorite player and they have a team that would compete with him on it (Kobe, Brand, Maggette, Kaman and a draft pick pg). Phoenix is rumored to be swapping Marion and filler for McGrady, but what if the extra cap space could land them Kobe for only Marion? Francis/Atkins Jackson/Mobley Richardson/Nachbar Wilcox/Taylor Yao/Mihm -or- Francis/Atkins Jackson/Mobley Marion/Nachbar MLE/Taylor Yao/Mihm
I really like Marion I think he is the kind of player we need to complement Yao. Any trade (w/o Yao) to get him would be worth looking at in my book.
If the Rockets are serious about getting a good backup PG, then this summer is the time to do it. Mike James- playing very well. Travis Best- would be perfect, kinda small, kinda good. Jon Barry- good shooter, good energy. Lindsey Hunter- could provide good minutes off the bench. Bob Sura- all around kinda guy. Damon Jones- don't know why we've passed on him, twice. Brent Barry- best fit, would make one of our guards much more expendable.
brent barry would be perfect and damon jones would be like a fresh legged mark jackson as far a dishin and protecting the ball goes. Also i wouldn't mind seeing Cardinal get a tryout.
I can't wait for the end of the offseason, just so I don't have to read Brent Barry's name 50 times in every thread. He's a soild back up 2 guard, that's all. But I agree that this is the time to find a back up point, just not a Barry.
guys... Carlos Arroyo is a solid pg. He can spot up and shoot and protect the ball very well. Get rid of Jim Jackson and pick up Brent Berry and Arroyo!!! Etan Thomas at 4 is worse than cato running at 4.
Guards 1) Carlos Arroyo - True PG. Best in this bunch. 2) Brent Barry - wouldn't be a 'bargain' per se, but could contribute. The rest of these guards are reserves for the rocks... PGs 2) Damon Jones - Bringing him back could work out nicely for the rockets. He's not really a guy to move SF to the 2, though. 3) Mike James 4) Jamal Crawford 5) Rafer Alston - Skip to my HOU 6) Charlie Ward 7) Brevin Knight SG 1) Jon Barry 2) Bob Sura Forwards/Centers 1) Stomile Swift - the best bargain on this list. A much better all-around and athletic PF than Cato or MoT. He would contribute immediately, and blossom under JVG's system. He only got about 20MPG this year in Memphis. If give more time, this guy could be a star. 2) Etan Thomas - a much better fit than MoT. He's more athletic, a better rebound, but w/o the instant offense. 3) Chris Andersen - more of a backup guy to me, but still young and talented.
Yeah, but at the end of the offseason, if Barry isn't on the Rockets you'll hear his name 50 times in every thread that we should trade for him.
Why do you guys keep saying that Chris Anderson is talented? He can only jump and dunk. If you watch him closely, he gets out of position for rebound, gets boxed out easily, commits stupid fouls, and turns the ball over when it is given. Dunk contest might have boost his stock value, but he is not a good basketball player.
I agree, the guy has some athleticism but thats it. I guess he's worth a look, but I don't like the guy. Plus, he looks and acts like an idiot sometimes.
I like having a Chris Anderson type on the team. He would fit the role Chucky Brown played - rebound, defense and alot of hustle.
Not many impact players that we can acquire other then brent barry and antonio mcdyess if hes healthy. Arroyo even with some pretty good stats only 28 minutes a game and cant hit the three very well. He has some of the same tendencys as steve such as he likes to dribble too much. Barry is a starter and not a bench player, when he can shoot like he does and be a pg as he was in the beggining of the season, the rockets would be a much better team. He was the glue for the supersonics as JJ was ours, when he went out with his broken hand thats when the sonics started to falter.
Brent Barry has shot 56% from within the arc over the last 3 seasons at SEA and is on record as wanting 4 years of MLE $ (not exactly bargain $). IMO, that's a huge waste of money as long as Francis and Mobley are both on the roster and playing 40+ mpg. And even if they are both here (which I doubt) and you cut them to a barebones 37 apiece and don't play JJ at the 2, that leaves 22 total minutes at PG/SG for a guy who puts up excellent numbers on a per minute basis and has averaged mid 30 mpg over the past 3 seasons.
So do you think we should trade Mobley? If so, wouldn't you be concerned that the improvement in scoring - or type of scoring - would be nullified by the poorer defense? Basically, what's more valuable, Mobley's defense or Barry's shooting?
To me, Barry's shooting. Individually this team isnt a great defensive team. Collectively they are. I am not saying we can put just any player out there and be good defensively, but if we put people out there that have good offense and average defense, we can mask their defensive deficiencies with our collective team defense.
Ok Arroyo vs Francis Minimum wage vs. max contract Catch & Shoot vs. I can't shoot unless I do some shaking and baking Sucks at 3 (as pg) 32% vs sucks at 3 (as pg) 30% Assist vs Turn over ratios of 2.24 vs. 1.73 Arroyo will be a very good pick for Houston, but I think he is a restricted free agent. I don't think he is a ball hog and if he dribbles out a lot of clock is because Utah does not have a go to guy.
I'd take a flyer on McDyess. I think he'd like to come here, seeing as we almost signed him if we didn't sign Pippen in 99. He also has a home here. I would offer him a 1 or 2 year deal for around 3-4 mill per. I know it's a bit of a risk, but if he can play like he did in the past, our frontline combo of McDyess and Yao would be the best in the league.
