You know, maybe I shouldn't post this, but the coverage this has been getting is absurd, IMO. You have athletes like Jose Uribe and Andre Waters (whose suicide could and probably should have a far reaching impact on those who play football and other sports where you're more susceptible to receiving concussions) who have passed away recently and there's barely a blurb. Yet for a while there, Barbaro's condition was one of the top stories everyday. Don't get me wrong, it is a sad story, but I think we need some perspective. Either start treating the deaths of all animals the same or give it a rest. What makes this horse any better than any other animal that was put to rest today, other than it won some rich guys more money?
people like animals (and this one happened to break his leg on national television, kind of like the superbowl of horse racing)
Would you agree that this is a little over the top: "He leaves no offspring, but his legacy is clear. In his moment of anguish Barbaro touched the nation. More than anything else he was a horse that affirmed our humanity." --Jeremy Schaap reporting on the death of Barbaro. Seriously? He affirmed our humanity? Give me a break.
Well, what if some guy bet a lot of money on Barbaro in the Derby, had wild, passionate sex with his wife while celebrating those winnings, and the child conceived from that sex goes on to discover the cure for AIDS. So, in a way, Barbaro could cure AIDS...yeah, let's see YOUR pet cure AIDS...
lol, that is over the top. Usually when sports is compared to life (or something serious) it goes over the top. Just report about sports and save me this B.S.
over the top for Barbaro. right on target for Smarty Jones!!! no bigger horse racing story than Seabiscuit...that was a story that truly did inspire people and captured the nation's interest.
I used to give my friend a hard time for this position, but it's seriously become so bad on Sportscenter that I only watch ESPN News and they've even started to do that. I think the feel-good sports stories jumped the shark when we had to hear how Matt Leinart used to be fat and cross-eyed before banging basketball players and used up skanks.
i think most people would feel bad about any horse that this happened to, this one just happened to be more famous. rip
I agree with RM95 about the coverage this received while more important issues get a 20 second spot on sports shows and the news.
I had a terrible joke all lined up, but it's really not a laughing matter. Not that the joke was funny by any means.
