Economically speaking, when China sneezes, Taiwan catches a flu.

What do you base your opinion on? Before 1997, the few HK people who wanted the British to stay were mostly special interest groups like the ones who held high civil positions in the colonial government. If you still do not know, these people had all got their passports and emigrated to Britian before 1997. They cannot even be called Hong Kong people now. Anyway, why do you keep trying to insult the 7 millions HK people by insisting that they would rather be ruled by colonialists? You are trying very hard to be an A-hole here.

He's either one of the people who got kicked out, or all he has to go by are Western media reports. That's the only explanation I can see.

I don't necessarily disagree but I think you might be underestimating the depth of feeling of the pro-independent Taiwanese. There are still enough of them to sway opinon regarding unification. While they may not ever outrightly get Taiwan independence they will likely continue to sway enough public opinion to not accept unification without strong guarentees of preserving Taiwan's system.

While economics will continue to push for interdependence it won't be enough to win over the die hards and they still have an affect on Taiwan politics.

Getting back on topic granting suffrage to Hong Kong would go a long way towards reducing the sway of the die pro-independence Taiwanese.

You don't have to disagree. Both freedom guarantees and economy are influential to Taiwanese voters. I'm saying that right now, uncertainty might dull some passions among Taiwanese for a freer state. Call me cynical, but I don't think either side believes that guarantees set in place would hold in the long term, regardless of China's handling of Hong Kong.

In an ironic sense, some Taiwanese would gladly unify when China becomes a democratic state, yet Taiwan would likely lose its unique status inside a congress that represents 1.5 billion people. That unique status, more than the ideals of freedom, is what drives the pro-independence hardliners.

Civil discourse does not include the right to insult 7 million Hong Kong people by making up the lie that they would rather be ruled by the colonialist. You have made a stupid and baseless assertion. Deal with it.

Your moniker is one of the more hypocritical ones to come down the pike in awhile.

I wanna chill with reasonable people, not the ones who make up lies to insult 7 million people in Hong Kong. You are the hypocritical one here to speak up for the poster who threw out the stupid and mindless assertion to insult 7 million people.

Do you mean their policies in Hong Kong? There are things I like and there are things that I don't. What about you? But I guess it's very clear that i do NOT like colonial rules. What about you? My stance here is very clear, I am calling out the poster who insulted 7 million HK people by insisting that they would prefer to be ruled by the colonialists. What's yours?

Meowgi, you may agree or disagree with the policies of your government. But if you happen to disagree with some of it's policies and you decide to protest against it, does that automatically mean you would rather be ruled by foreign colonialists?

They may not like communist rule but they hate colonial rule more than anything.
